UNEP urges mining companies to better manage tailings facilities

The agency is urging mining companies to put safety first and avoid erecting dams using methods that are known to be high risk.

Philex Mining could face more penalties, but refuses to pay

Philippines-based Philex Mining Corp. (PX:PM), the country's biggest miner, may have to pay fines for violations of the Clean Water Act and the company’s own Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC), the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) said Thursday.

Silver tailings: Profitable waste?

Tailings are materials produced from mining such as milled rock and effluents. In many cases, massive quantities of these materials, regarded as waste, are left from previous operations. Given the potential health and environmental risks associated with tailings, they could be viewed as problems or project deterrents, but then again, they could be viewed as a source of cash.
