The Responsible Mining Foundation says many of the world’s largest mining companies are not able to ‘know and show’ how effectively they are addressing the risks of tailings dam failure and seepage.
Newcrest Mining says experts on site have observed no environmental damage.
The agency is urging mining companies to put safety first and avoid erecting dams using methods that are known to be high risk.

Adverse publicity surrounding the failings of Philex Mining's (PX:PM) tailings dams in the Philippines attest more to the shortcomings of its corporate legal team more than poor operating standards in developing economies.
Tailings are materials produced from mining such as milled rock and effluents. In many cases, massive quantities of these materials, regarded as waste, are left from previous operations. Given the potential health and environmental risks associated with tailings, they could be viewed as problems or project deterrents, but then again, they could be viewed as a source of cash.
