FLSmidth and ArcelorMittal reduce emissions from sinter machines

Earlier today, ArcelorMittal inaugurated the world’s first hybrid filter for a sinter machine at its plant in Zenica, Bosnia–Herzegovina. The filter was installed and hot commissioned by FLSmidth Airtech.

Steel plants can now profitably upgrade their environmental solutions for sinter machines while also meeting future emission requirements. The hybrid filter at ArcelorMittal consists of a converted electrostatic precipitator (ESP) with a fabric filter section implemented for high productivity and environmental compliance purposes. While keeping investment and operating expenses at a minimum, this solution performs de-dusting of one of the three sinter machines at Zenica, cutting dust emissions to less than 10 mg/nm3.

“We at ArcelorMittal Zenica are very pleased with our choice of partner and with the successful commissioning of the new hybrid filter, which keeps dust emissions below 10 mg/nm3. ArcelorMittal and FLSmidth have jointly opened a new chapter in environment protection with this new technology in sintering process,” said P K Biju Nair, ArcelorMittal Zenica’s chief executive officer.

“A strong relationship has formed between FLSmidth and ArcelorMittal since we jointly tested hybrid filtration on a sinter machine in 2013 in a pilot filtration plant to reduce flue gas volumes. With this installation and hot commissioning of the world’s first hybrid filter for a sinter machine, FLSmidth solidifies its position as technology leader in the segment,” said Henrik Vittrup Pedersen, general manager of FLSmidth Airtech.
