Lihir Island one of world’s safest mines

Papua New Guinea’s largest gold mine (based on 2008 gold production), LGL’s Lihir Island operation, has proven itself as one of the world’s safest mines after achieving a record 365 days without a Lost Time Injury (LTI). The milestone equates to more than 12 million hours worked at the site, and is considered to be an outstanding record by global safety standards in mining. LGL Executive General Manager Noel Foley said the result was well ahead of world’s best practice, with the most common safety benchmark in metalliferous mining an LTI frequency rate of 5. LTI frequency rate is the number of lost time injuries multiplied by 1,000,000 divided by hours worked over a 12-month period. (more…)

“73% decline in total acquisitions spending on diamonds” – Metals Economic Group’s Strategic Report

Metals Economics Group’s (MEG) recent Strategic Report points to a 73% decline in total acquisitions spending on diamonds - $210.5 million in 2008-09 compared with $760.2 million in 2007-08. The mining information and analysis company’s report showed a total of 19.7 Mct in resources changed hands in 2008-09, a 91% decrease from 208.4 Mct in 2007-08. Diamond transactions of at least $1 million decreased in number by 46% in the year between June 2008 and May 2009-14 transactions in 2008-09 compared with 26 in 2007-08. (more…)

Company Announcement to the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority No. 11-2009, 9 July 2009 FLSmidth Minerals has received orders worth USD 41m (DKK 220m) from India based Utkal Alumina International Limited for a bauxite grinding and a mud washing plant. The contracts include design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning. This order for bauxite mills confirms FLSmidth's leadership in the alumina market in India having secured the last three successive contracts from different customers. The bauxite grinding package includes three 300 tonnes per hour rod mills, bauxite storage silos, handling equipment and pumps. The mud washing package includes nine settler/washer tanks in washing circuit along with flocculant dosing systems, holding tanks, pumps/valves and piping. The decantation circuit is an integral part of all alumina plants, with FLSmidth being the market leader worldwide in designing these systems. Addressing a Chinese investment forum in Adelaide today, Toro Energy’s Managing Director, Greg Hall, said price and security of supply would be the main driver of the future energy mix. If you double the cost of the basic fuel material used in various power generation techniques, nuclear power is the least price sensitive - and therefore delivers the best potential to absorb price increases while maintaining electricity prices, allowing solid returns on investment in long-term viable power. Atlas Copco has developed three unique hammers, containing a number of features like a new vibro-reduced housing, multiple gripping surfaces and a large D-handle. TEX 05PE

"The hammers feature a new vibro-reduced housing, which reduces vibrations throughout the whole hammer body", explains Jan Ohlson, Product line manager, pneumatic hammers and breakers. "There are vibro-reduced handles and other gripping surfaces for the operator to use. Compared to standard pneumatic hammers, the operator experiences less vibrations in both hands." The new range comprises the chipping hammer TEX 05PE, developed for small jobs in soft material, and the medium-weight pick hammers TEX 09PE and TEX 12PE, designed for medium to heavy applications in brick, concrete or other hard materials. TEX 12PE

The multiple gripping surfaces give the operator the possibility of choosing an optimum working position. All three hammers have a large D-handle with enough room for a gloved hand. TEX 09PE and TEX 12 PE are also equipped with a flexible front handle that provides excellent support. Another feature on TEX 09PE and TEX 12PE is a new latch. It gives quick tool changes in combination with low weight and easy operation. The TEX 05PE comes with a standard hexagonal 19x50 mm shank, while the TEX 09PE and TEX 12PE come in two different versions, one with the standard hexagonal shank 22 x 82.5 mm and one with a round shank 25 x 75 mm.

First quarter coal market and Euracoal’s outlook for the future

Euracoal reports that for the first time in many years, the world market for hard coal fell by some 8 % during the first quarter 2009. This latest Euracoal (http://www.euracoal.org/) report arrived too late for International Mining’s August article on the global coal industry, which is about to be published. Steam coal was 140.1 Mt, down from 140.7 Mt in the first quarter of 2008. The fall in coking coal waxs much more severe, down from 42.6 Mt to 29.9 Mt in 2009. The EMBS achieves a high degree of practicality from its ball tray deck, the physical area beneath the surface of its wire cloth screen that contains balls in specialized compartments. According to Jack Steinbuch, General Sales Manager for Cleveland Vibrator Co., the linear vibratory design of the EMBS actuates vigorous ball bouncing movements within their ball deck compartments and against the underside of the screen section. As the balls randomly strike the bottom of the screen, they knock out angular pieces that have wedged into screen openings. This action ultimately keeps openings clear for more efficient screening, thereby eliminating the potential plug blinding that can occur when material such as plastic regrind gets caught in screen openings. The ball screen deck is essential to EMBS functionality. Without a ball screen deck, screen openings eventually become blinded and impede the ability to separate material sizes. With the EMBS product screen openings are kept open, thereby reducing or eliminating the potential for production shut downs for manual cleaning. EMBS units are mounted horizontally, requiring no gravitational assistance for product conveying along the screening surface. The EMBS screener is equipped with 1800 RPM vibrators that provide 0.10 inch stroke. Force output of the drives may be varied to decrease stroke to reduce final conveying speed. For difficult to handle, light density, fluffy products, or where screen openings greater than one inch are being used, lower frequency, higher amplitude drive may be substituted with our 900 or 1200 RPM drive options. Mine optimisation worth its weight in gold

When mining optimisation expert Tim Horsley can't identify significant and practical operational improvements to save his client a good amount of money, he stops work. Mr Horsley, mining manager at Coffey International Limited subsidiary, Coffey Mining, said that in the current economic downturn, mine optimisation is something all mining companies should be focusing on right now. According to Mr Horsley, it is much easier to make hard decisions - such as changing mining methods - when an operation is in 'a do or die' situation. "This is the third commodities downturn we have seen in 20 years, and in times such as these, mine planning and optimisation is as important as ever," he said. "Mine optimisation doesn't need to take a lot of time or be an expensive exercise, but it has very real potential to add significant value, sometimes in the order of hundreds of millions of dollars over the life of an operation." BIG PICTURE PLANNING Mr Horsley underlined that such gains can only be made by looking at the big picture of the entire operational process. "Mine optimisation should be approached from a broad perspective, as it is rarely the case that parts of the process can be optimised in isolation. If you specifically focus on one part of the value chain there is a risk of transferring costs or reducing revenue elsewhere." "The key is in providing a robust and flexible mine plan rather than the ultimate theoretical optimisation 'black box' solution," he said. Mr Horsley believes in a balanced approach to mine planning and optimisation, emphasising that it is vital to work with a strong understanding of the synergies that exist between different areas within a mine project and to focus on solutions that can be implemented with a practical action plan. "Synergies between the processes can add or destroy value and so it is vital that the project process is assessed from the in-situ resource through to cash revenue generation," he said. "There is significant value to be realised in being able to model and understand these synergies, particularly with respect to the definition of 'ore' locally within a mine and how this impacts on productivities, costs and the downstream processes." FLEXIBILITY THE KEY Mr. Horsley has a level of expertise in 'differential cut-off grade analysis', which has particular application to underground mines where the ore geometry, grade distribution and mineralogy are complex. "A 'one size fits all' approach to cut-off grade in many mines can be clearly demonstrated to be sub-optimal," he said. "A more flexible and practical approach can make a big difference in value by defining more stable and productive mining areas that might be of lower grade, but more than make up in lower costs and higher mill throughput. On the other side of the coin, there may be value in lifting the cut-off grade and apply more selective mining methods." One such example is by applying what Mr Horsley refers to as 'companion mining methods'. "Sometimes there may be opportunities to introduce a secondary mining method that may, on face value, be a higher cost method but actually adds value when considered in the full context of the operation because of the flexibility it can add to the production schedule." DECISION MAKING IN TOUGH TIMES Mr Horsley said that stepping outside the box and making a radical change to the mine plan can be a difficult decision for many operators. "Many sites, and in some cases mining companies, regard themselves as practitioners in a particular area of mining. Open pit operators, for example, may be uncomfortable about going underground, and vice versa for underground operators, which can lead to bias in decision making. Such reluctance to change often requires significant incentive, however, lows in the price cycle, such as we are currently experiencing, present an ideal opportunity to make these changes." PLANNING FOR THE PRICE CYCLE Although the current resources downturn has meant that many mine operators are looking to make savings wherever they can, Mr Horsley believes that mine optimisation is such an important process that it should be prioritised by organisations throughout the price cycle. "The key to a mine's longer term viability is to maintain a continuous focus on optimisation in good times as well as bad," he said. "A thorough study can provide compelling ways of streamlining a mine's current operations and would provide a life-of-mine optimisation model which can be periodically updated, and optimisations re-run with minimal effort." "Keeping such a model current provides a valuable tool for scenario analysis planning and allows a mine operator to react very quickly to changing circumstances." According to Coffey Mining chief executive officer, Dan O'Toole, it is the cashed up companies that often neglect to pay attention to optimising value and keeping costs as low as possible in good times. "The first things to go in a downturn are exploration and drilling, and so it is the organisations that have planned for the cyclical nature of the industry who will survive and see the cycle out in relatively good shape." "Just as no battlefield general would go into a fight without a backup plan, planning for a downturn and optimising your operations so you are running to peak efficiency in good times as well as bad is the most prudent management strategy."

WESTPORT, CT, July 22, 2009 -- Terex Corporation (NYSE: TEX) today announced a net loss for the second quarter of 2009 of $77.6 million, or $0.78 per share, compared to net income of $236.3 million, or $2.32 per share, for the second quarter of 2008. Net sales were $1,320.2 million in the second quarter of 2009, a decrease of 55.0% from $2,935.9 million in the second quarter of 2008. Adjusting for the translation effect of foreign currency exchange rate changes, net sales decreased approximately 49% from the comparable prior year period. During the second quarter of 2009, the Company incurred after-tax charges of $31.4 million, or $0.32 per share, associated with restructuring programs and a continued reduction in production levels. Additionally, as previously disclosed, the Company and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") Staff have reached a tentative agreement in principle to resolve the SEC's concerns which would require, among other things, that the Company pay a penalty. The report projects that by 2035, coal-based electricity generation plants with CCS could replace the current coal fleet with nearly pollution-free power through a combination of new facilities and retrofitting and repowering of existing plants. Caterpillar Moves Forward with New Large Mining Trucks

Caterpillar is moving rapidly forward with the new large mining trucks showcased at MINExpo last year and representing the company’s largest investment ever in new mining technology. The Cat^® 793F and 797F mechanical drive trucks and the 795F AC electric drive truck are all achieving milestones.

The 793F and the 797F have accumulated more than 75,000 hours of field testing and have proven their performance capabilities and their durability. The new Cat C175 engine that powers them has racked up 130,000 hours of field testing in mining trucks and more than 120,000 hours in power systems. Because of the success of these field-follow programs, the 793F is targeted to go into full production within a few months and the 797F late this year.

Caterpillar engineers have been testing two 795F AC prototypes, including the truck shown at MINExpo, at the Tucson Proving Grounds. The development program has provided input for the construction of a new 795F AC in Decatur, Illinois. The new truck recently shipped to a copper mine in North America where it will serve as the first field-follow 795F AC as it works at the mine. The 345-ton-capacity (313-tonne-capacity) 795F AC will enter a new size class for Caterpillar, and, as a result, the primary focus of the Caterpillar AC electric program has been on the 795F AC. The commercial launch date will be defined as the field-follow program progresses.

“It’s fitting that soon after producing the 50,000^th Cat off-highway truck, we are now shipping our first ultra-class AC electric drive truck to a mine,” said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar Global Mining. “Our new trucks further solidify our position as the one manufacturer to provide unparalleled options and unmatched customer support.”

Innovation drives new trucks

The new Cat trucks offer innovative designs for improved safety and performance. “All of the F-Series mining trucks incorporate innovative design and engineering that enables them to deliver lowest cost per ton,” said Ed McCord, mining truck product manager. “With the latest technology in AC electric drives now available, Caterpillar is able to offer both types of drive to the mining industry. We see the addition of electric mining trucks as a complement to our mechanical drive trucks.”

The most evident new component is the Cat C175 diesel engine, which is the power plant for each of the new trucks. The C175 meets US EPA Tier 2 emissions standards, yet it delivers 4,000 horsepower (2 983 kW) in the 20-cylnder version that powers the 400-ton (345-tonne) capacity 797B.

The 16-cylinder C175 powers the 795F AC with 3,400 horsepower, and it powers the 793F, which has 250 tons (227 tonnes) capacity, with 2,650 horsepower (1 976 kW). The C175 promises longer life between rebuilds, lower sound levels, improved altitude capability and improved fuel consumption compared to the 3500 Series engines it replaces.

As a brand new platform, the 795F AC incorporates new technologies throughout. For example, four-corner blended braking and retarding—using Cat oil immersed and cooled disc brakes as well as electrical retarding—enhances safety and operator confidence. The remote-mounted generator enables servicing without removing other major components, and the wheel motors mounted inside the axle enable easy and separate servicing of the final drives. The retarding grids are radial, which promotes more uniform air flow for better reliability. And the Cat proprietary drive system is fully integrated and fully supported by Caterpillar.

Caterpillar believes that mechanical drive mining trucks will satisfy the needs of the vast majority of mining operations. But as the only manufacturer of 200-ton (181 tonnes) and larger mining trucks with both mechanical drive and electric drive systems, Caterpillar will soon be able to offer trucks that address all mining company preferences.

FLSmidth has received an order worth approximately 100m Danish kroner from Anrak Aluminium Ltd., India for a gas suspension calcination system. The equipment is for Anrak's 1.5 million tonnes per year alumina refinery project located 65km from the city of Visakhapatnam in the east Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

The contract includes design, engineering, and supervision for the entire equipment package. The scope of supply comprises a gas suspension calciner, hydrate storage and reclaiming equipment, pan filters, baghouse filters, a pipe conveyor and a material handling system for two 25,000 tonne silos.

This is yet another large order from the alumina industry and the fourth contract FLSmidth has received in India for a gas suspension calcination system over the past four years.

FLSmidth's project centre in India is responsible for the preliminary engineering work and for the coordination and execution of the order. The Indian project centre has assembled a global FLSmidth team with the best technology available to provide a "One Source, One Partner" solution for Anrak Aluminium.

Chicago, IL, August 4, 2009 — For the fourth year in a row, Komatsu America Corp. proudly helped launch more than 20,000 rubber ducks into the Chicago River in the annual “Windy City Rubber Ducky Derby” to benefit the Special Olympics. On July 30, a Komatsu HM300-2 30-ton articulated dump truck dumped the ducks into the river from the Columbus Drive Bridge, signaling the start of the race. He obtained his BASc. in Geological Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1964. He worked as an exploration geologist in all areas of Canada through his early career in the 1960s.
