Craven's ingenious argument is that when it comes to global warming, the facts we fight over don't actually matter. Far more important is that the experiment is already running. We will see soon enough who is right, but in the meantime, Craven believes we should analyse the situation using the tools of risk management. Here, the answer is indisputable. If we take strong action and global warming turns out to be no big deal, we have needlessly incurred a serious economic cost. If we fail to take strong action and global warming turns out to be catastrophic, we have sacrificed the entire planet and everybody's future. QUEENSLAND coal mining magnate and former Macarthur Coal chief Ken Talbot has taken out the Dealer of the Year award at a packed gala dinner on the last night of Diggers & Dealers in Kalgoorlie.

Talbot was recognised for yielding a substantial premium for his shares in Macarthur Coal.

In mid-2008, Talbot received and accepted an offer for his shareholding in excess of $A21 per share. Iron ore junior Atlas Iron won the Diggers of the Year award. It has been a massive year for David Flanagan and his team, with mining at the flagship Pardoo operation kicking off in October last year and the maiden iron ore shipment leaving Port Hedland last December...read the rest of the article here.

Terex to Move Manufacturing From Cedar Rapids Plant

WESTPORT, CT, Aug. 6, 2009 -- Terex Corporation today announced that it will be consolidating the manufacturing of the equipment made at its Terex Cedarapids plant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, into other Terex facilities in North America. Engineering, sales and service functions for materials processing equipment now made at the plant will be retained at the facility for the foreseeable future.

“The worldwide recession has greatly reduced construction equipment orders. As a result, manufacturing capacity across the company is greater than needed to meet foreseeable market demand,” said Tom Riordan, Terex President and Chief Operating Officer. “The decision to move manufacturing from Cedar Rapids was not an easy one because we know this action affects team members and their families. Over the last several months, the plant has instituted temporary shutdowns, reduced positions and placed team members on indefinite layoff. These actions were not sufficient given market conditions and our need to ensure that manufacturing operations are as efficient as possible.”

Approximately 170 team members are affected by this decision. For union-represented team members, all terms of labor contracts will be honored, and for other team members, severance pay and outplacement assistance will be provided. New US labour-backed study supports economic, energy benefits of coal

A new study backed by major labour unions concluded that clean coal technologies can help usher in a US economic boon, boost the nation’s energy security and successfully manage carbon dioxide emissions. The study, Employment and Other Economic Benefits from Advanced Coal Electric Generation with Carbon Capture and Storage Technologies, found that building up to 100 GW of new coal-fuelled generation would create nearly 49,000 new jobs, generate more than $45 billion in direct economic benefits and produce more than $100 billion in direct and implied benefits, given multiplier effects. Fuel cells for underground vehicles - progress is being made

One of the articles in IM’s forthcoming September issue looks at fuel cells vehicles for underground mines, and mentions the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute (www.fuelcellpropulsion.org). A government-industry consortium - the Mine Safety and Health Administration, United Mine Workers of America, a fuelcell-vehicle developer, safety consultancy, and a coal company - are developing and will demonstrate a zero-emission, fuelcell-powered coal mine vehicle. Bucyrus has won a contract to deliver a complete, automated plow longwall to Polish mine operator Lubelski Wegiel Bogdanka SA for its Bogdanka coal mine in Puchaczów. Bogdanka is one of Poland’s largest mine operators, producing 7.86Mt of raw coal in 2008. It is the first complete plow longwall system sold into Poland. A Gleithobel GH1600 plow system, suitable for mining seams up to 2.3m in thick has been ordered. Bucyrus designed the plow specifically for high productivity in very hard coal. The system will initially begin work on a 250m working panel at the mine, and will progress to a 305m working panel, 1.4-1.8m in thickness...read the rest of the article here.

Western Areas options acquisition of Bioheap leaching technology for Forrestania

Western Areas has executed a Heads of Agreement to acquire the BioHeap sulphide leaching technology from Pacific Ore. The agreement provides Western Areas with an option period of up to six months to conduct due diligence on the BioHeap process, assess the global patents and licences and conduct test work on a range of low grade sulphide ores from the Forrestania nickel project in Western Australia. BioHeap is a bacterial heap leaching technology developed to leach low grade sulphide ores to produce intermediate products which can be sold directly to nickel refineries. A large amount of test work has been carried out on a range of nickel and copper deposits around the world and the technology has been successfully applied at the Radio Hill nickel mine. (more…)

Ontario Mining Association Seeks Clarification on Mining Act and Far North Act Legislation

This article was provided by the Ontario Mining Association (OMA), an organization that was established in 1920 to represent the mining industry of the province. The Ontario Mining Association submitted its views on two important pieces of legislation today at hearings in Thunder Bay. OMA President Chris Hodgson presented the Association´s report to the Legislature´s Standing Committee on General Government, which is reviewing both Bill 173, An Act to Amend the Mining Act, and Bill 191, An Act with respect to land use planning and protection of the Far North. Joining Mr. Hodgson was John Blogg, OMA Secretary and Manager of Industrial Relations, along with Adele Faubert, Manager of Aboriginal Affairs at Goldcorp´s Musselwhite Mine, and Jerome Girard, Mill Superintendent at the Musselwhite Mine. The OMA stuck to three main points on each piece of legislation. “The OMA does have some concerns with Bill 173 and would like to seek clarification on some aspects of the proposed legislation, ensuring that there are no ambiguities impairing the ability of mining to continue to play the major role it does in the economic and social development of Ontario,” said Mr. Hodgson. On the Mining Act, the OMA focused on the duty to consult, Notice of Material Changes concerning existing closure plans and consultation and the dispute resolution process. “A basic foundation of mining success in Ontario — the things that set us apart and give us an advantage over some other jurisdictions with significant mineral potential — is rule of law and certainty of title,” said Mr. Hodgson. “For this reason, the Aboriginal consultation provisions in Bill 173 need to be clear, transparent and consistent with current case law, which states the government has the primary duty, with some exceptions, to consult with Aboriginal communities.” The OMA also asked for greater clarity in mine closure plan consultation rules and the make-up of tribunals to handle disputes, which may arise...read the rest of the article here.

Siemens VAI replaces and restarts AOD stainless-steel converters at ThyssenKrupp Nirosta within only three weeks

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies replaced two existing stationary AOD vessels and started up two new exchange-type AOD converters at the German stainless steel producer ThyssenKrupp Nirosta in Krefeld, including auxiliary equipment. All installation work up until the converter start-ups in the Spring of 2009 was carried out within only three weeks' time, minimizing production downtime. Following the fulfillment of the guarantee performance figures, the Final Acceptance Certificate was issued by the customer.

In the course of a modernization project at ThyssenKrupp Nirosta, the two existing stationary AOD converters were replaced by Siemens VAI with new exchangeable AOD converters. The produced steel grades comprise mostly high-quality austenitic chromium-nickel grades used for a wide range of flat-steel applications. The project scope comprised the complete dismantling of the existing vessels down to their foundations, installation of two new horse-shoe-type trunnion rings with tilting drives for the exchange-vessel system as well as the engineering, supply and installation of the new converters and related equipment. Siemens VAI also provided civil works, steel structure, charging bins, modifications to the existing alloy- and flux-feeding system, new process-gas regulation stations, new waste-gas hoods, a converter exchange car, the converter relining and wrecking stand with tilting device, two converter transfer cars, two converter-preheaters and one jib crane. Terex Completes SEC Settlement of 2000 To 2004 Accounting Issues

WESTPORT, CT, August 12, 2009 –Terex Corporation (NYSE: TEX) today announced that the previously announced agreement in principle it has reached with the Staff of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”), has now been approved by the Commission. This agreement is subject to court approval, and will become final upon entry by the court of a final decree. This settlement concludes the SEC’s investigation of Terex related mainly to (1) certain transactions between Terex and United Rentals, Inc. that took place in 2000 and 2001, and one transaction between United Rentals, Inc. and one of Terex’s subsidiaries that took place in 2001 before that subsidiary was acquired by Terex, and (2) the circumstances of the restatement of certain of Terex’s financial statements for the years 2000-2004.

Under the terms of the settlement, Terex consented, without admitting or denying the SEC’s allegations, to the entry of a judgment which enjoins Terex from committing or aiding and abetting any future violations of the anti-fraud, books and records, reporting and internal control provisions of the federal securities laws and related SEC rules. Terex is also required to pay a civil penalty of $8 million for which Terex recorded a charge in its quarter ended June 30, 2009. Siemens VAI (Taicang) Manufacturing Co. (SVMC) and the Chinese steel manufacturer Nanjing Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. (NISCO) have signed a roller refurbishment contract for two continuous slab casters. According to this contract, initially for a period of three years, SVMC will be taking care of refurbishing rolls of the casters CCM1 and CCM2. This is the first order that has been received for the roll refurbishing workshop in Taicang, which was inaugurated in May 2009. Payment is based on the Siemens VAI “cost per ton” model and is orientated to the tonnage produced on the casters. Gold, geothermal energy, underground carbon storage and more up for debate at Paydirt Conference in Victoria

The revival of Victoria’s gold sector, coupled with emerging opportunities in other base metals, mineral sands, geothermal energy, and some of Australia’s most likely locations for underground carbon storage, will all be on the agenda at the 2009 Paydirt Resources Victoria Conference. Since 2008, Victoria’s minerals industry has been bolstered by a variety of legislative and incentive-driven advances - most notably the passage in February of the 2009 Resource Industries Legislation Amendment Act, which from next year will begin to reduce regulatory burdens on mining and exploration ventures across the State. IPO figures highlight tough times for Australian explorers

New figures announced today at the Paydirt 2009 Resources Victoria Conference have highlighted the struggle in the past two years for Australian explorers to raise working capital for both ‘brownfield’ and ‘greenfield’ exploration and mining projects. Figures from financial services firm Patersons Securities showed that there were 252 Initial Public Offers (IPOs) in 2007, dropping to 68 last year, and as Director of Corporate Finance Neil Doyle confirms, “just eight so far this year.” He said that “the impact is no more evident than in the mining sector, which crashed from 140 IPOs in 2007 to 40 last year to just three this year. DUNGANNON, N. IRELAND, August 13, 2009 -- Powerscreen® crushing and screening equipment is used far and wide and its mobility helps ensure that it gets to where it's needed -- that much is well known. For Powerscreen dealer SEMC Hardware, however, this meant moving a three stage, track mounted crushing and screening plant to its customer in Suriname, South America, via river barge. And this was no small move. The plant consists of three tracked crushers and four tracked screens. For those needing a refresher in geography, Suriname is a former Dutch colony on Brazil's northern border with approximately 800,000 inhabitants. SEMC Hardware sold the equipment to a major Dutch civil construction company to process material from a new quarry located approximately 85 km from the capital of Paramaribo. The machines shipped up the Suriname River consist of a Powerscreen® Pegson XA400S, Powerscreen® Warrior 1800, Powerscreen® Pegson 1300 Maxtrak, Powerscreen® Chieftain 2400, Powerscreen® Pegson XV350, Powerscreen® H6203R and a Powerscreen® Chieftain 1700. The Pegson XA400S will be located at a new quarry which is on a mountain in the jungle. The main processing plant will be located on a quay at the side of the Suriname River. This will consist of a Warrior 1800 which will be used to create oversize rock for sea defence dykes. The undersize from the Warrior as well as any material not used for sea defences will be processed through the large aggregate plant. This part of the plant consists of a Pegson 1300 Maxtrak and Chieftain 2400 to remove the dust from the feed to the tertiary crusher. The plus 5 mm product from the Chieftain 2400 is fed directly to a Pegson XV350 to ensure that all the aggregate produced will be cubical. This makes it ideal for the production of high strength concrete and wearing course asphalt. The Pegson XV350 will operate in closed circuit with a H6203R which uses the triple deck horizontal screen renowned for its high screening efficiency. Two product sizes will be made from the H6203R before the final sizes are produced on the Chieftain 1700. Powerscreen won this contract against intense competition from a Chinese manufacturer, owing both to the equipment's track record of performance, together with the high level of customer support offered locally by SEMC Hardware. Powerscreen worked quickly to complete and shipped all the equipment to the docks within six weeks of receiving the order. The successful completion of this order demonstrates the Powerscreen team's ability to produce large, highly flexible, multistage crushing and screening plants that can be delivered and supported through its partnership with an extensive distribution network. If a complicated multi-component plant like this can be delivered via river in remote Suriname, few if any locations would appear beyond the Powerscreen team's reach. The advance of methane recovery monitoring equipment technology is helping companies improve safety and generate new revenue. Phil McLean, Senior Engineer at gas sensing specialist Trolex explains the opportunities ahead. Underground mines are the single largest source of coal mine methane (CMM) emissions in most countries, although CMM is also produced from surface mines and as a result of post mining activities such as coal processing, storage and transportation. It is a greenhouse gas that has a global warming potential (GWP) 21 times as great as CO₂ thus its escape into the atmosphere is clearly to be avoided. To put the scale of methane emissions into perspective, it is estimated that by 2020 CMM emissions from the world’s coal mines will be some 40 billion m³/y, about a 30% increase from current levels and about 8% of the total methane emissions from human activity. More than one third of equipment sold to buyers outside United Arab Emirates

DUBAI, UAE (August 17, 2009) - Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers (NYSE and TSX: RBA), the world's largest industrial auctioneer, conducted a three-day unreserved auction in Dubai, UAE from August 10-12, 2009, generating gross auction proceeds in excess of US$29 million. More than 440 on-site and online bidders from 48 countries participated in the auction, which featured more than 2,100 equipment items and trucks. Highlights of the auction included a large selection of 2009 unused Komatsu equipment, including a PC400 excavator and several WA470 wheel loaders, which sold for US$230,000 each. "This successful August sale built on momentum from our record breaking sale in June. It is gratifying to know we've surpassed US$100 million in gross auction proceeds in Dubai for the first three quarters of the year - the first time we've achieved this since we started conducting auctions in Dubai," said Steve Barritt, Regional Manager, Ritchie Bros. Newlands Northern underground mine - located in the Bowen basin of Queensland, Australia - is the new record holder for weekly and monthly production from longwall operations. In May 2009, it extracted 961,891 t from the longwall, beating Beltana’s previous record of 955,049 t set in November 2005, and also broke the weekly record, with production of 251,720 t in a single week ending May 5. Overall, demand fell back from recent high levels, during the previous three quarters, as the combination of weak economic conditions and high prices made an impact, according to the Q2′09 Gold Demand Trends report published by World Gold Council (WGC). Although gold demand remains very high on a historical basis, in Q209 it was down 9% compared to a year earlier, a 6% decline in value terms to $21.3 billion. The figures, compiled independently for WGC by, precious metals consultancy, GFMS, show that total identifiable investment demand, which includes exchange traded funds (ETFs) and bars and coins, remained very strong. GFMS sees copper’s underlying fundamentals bringing higher prices each year out to 2012

Precious metals consultancy GFMS reports in its 3-Year Copper Forecast - August 2009 publication that although prices have slipped by around 5% since the recent high of $6,419/t, the underlying fundamentals are still there. On an average annual basis, it expects higher copper prices each year out to 2012. It also said that a strong recovery in consumption coupled with slower mine production (and by implication refined production) growth have caused it to predit an 88,000 t deficit for 2010. In addition to the direct impact of the improvement of the fundamentals on prices, the swing of the market to deficit (as well as the improvements in the wider commodities complex) is also expected to trigger additional investor interest in the metal, which will further boost prices. In 2010 it forecasts copper cash prices to top $7,500/t, averaging $6,500/t. (more…)

In his latest newsletter, A Buck or Two, Tjalling (TJ) de Jong reports on the different lithium plays. TJ writes, “A small number of countries produce lithium from either brines or concentrates, Chile being the largest producer. Argentina, Chile and Australia together accounted for about 82% of the total lithium production in 2008. Supply of lithium is dominated by production of lithium from brines SQM FMC lithium and Chemetall and the sole mineral producer Talison Minerals of Australia. China has been ramping up production since 2000 but as of 2008 supplies 8% to the lithium market.” In just the past week alone International Mining has heard from five lithium explorers. (more…)

Seven Liebherr T 282 B Ultra Class Mining Trucks Headed for Chile

The National Copper Corporation of Chile, Codelco, has placed an order for seven Liebherr T 282 B diesel electric, AC drive mining trucks for the open pit mine Radomiro Tomic. The 400 short ton (363 metric tonne) payload ultra class trucks will be equipped with MTU/DDC 20V4000 diesel engines rated at 3,650 hp / 2,722 kW and Michelin 56/80R63 low profile tires. The trucks are scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2009. Codelco will then have 48 Liebherr mining trucks in operation at its Codelco Norte Division: 30 trucks at Chuquicamata and 18 trucks at Radomiro Tomic. Radomiro Tomic is an open pit mine producing oxidized copper ore. The mine is located at 9,800 feet (3,000 meters) above sea level in the Andes Mountains at approximately 1,000 miles (1,670 kilometers) from Santiago, Chile. Radomiro Tomic has been in operation since 1995.

Combined with new features and upgrades, the D375A-6 is an outstanding crawler dozer.

Special features of the D375A-6 include:

Productivity Performance. The D375A-6 increases net engine output by 85 HP to 610 HP at 1800 RPM. As with the previous -5EO model, a reduction in fuel consumption is realized because of the automatic transmission with lockup torque converter. The use of Komatsu's electronic powertrain control system results in an efficient drawbar pull.An updated Full-U 28.8 cubic yard blade allows for increased production without increasing blade width or reducing digging force. The shape of the blade is similar to the next-size-class-larger Komatsu dozer, the D475A-5EO. Operator EnhancementsA large multi-lingual user-friendly LCD (liquid crystal display) multi-color monitor enables an operator to perform work efficiently and accurately. Excellent screen visibility is achieved with the use of TFT (Thin Film Transistor) enabling viewing at various angles and lighting conditions. Komatsu-designed function keys enable multi-function operations. Various meters, gauges and warning functions are centrally arranged for simple start-up, inspection and prompt warning of any abnormalities.To assist in environmentally aware and energy saving operation of the machine, an easy-to-read "eco gauge" is displayed on the right side of the multi-monitor screen. For energy saving operation, the operator simply operates the machine with the eco gauge in the green range.
Standard Mining SpecificationsThere are sixteen new, standard mining specifications including but not limited to: high mounted head lights; battery and starter isolator box; centralized grease points; and manual engine stop switches. Steel production in Asia the main driver for natural graphite – Roskill report

This clears the way for the finalisation of the Investment Agreement for Rio Tinto and Ivanhoe Mines’ huge Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold complex in the South Gobi region. These amendments will have a big effect on Mongolia. As Tom Albanese, Chief Executive of Rio Tinto said, “the agreement is a landmark for the future development of Mongolia’s resources industry.” Oyu Tolgoi is expected to commence production as early as 2013 with an approximate five year ramp-up to full capacity. Abigroup Selects Wenco for Iluka Resource’s Ouyen Mine

Abigroup has selected Wenco for Iluka Resource's Ouyen Mine, the world's largest zircon and second largest titanium dioxide producer.

The system supplied by Wenco will include the latest core software, a mobile supervisor terminal, and mobile data terminals on the entire fleet including Cat 657 scrapers, Komatsu HD785 trucks, and a Komatsu 375 dozer.

The Ouyen mine will also be receiving high precision GPS guidance BenchManager for the dozer and scraper fleet.

A unique operational consideration at the mine is that they will be mining most of their ore with bulldozers. The bulldozers will be required to push ore directly from the floor of the mine into a mobile crusher. The material will be broken down and mixed with water into a slurry, which is then pumped up 7km to the processing plant.

There is no blasting at Ouyen; therefore any material that cannot be free-dug will need to be ripped. "We were able to work within Ouyen's prerequisites and offer them a flexible solution that is adaptable enough to record time spent ripping and volume of material ripped. As well for two of the scrapers to be able to mine the flat lying ore to the correct elevation and record their load, haul and dump cycles." Jayson Bebek, Area Manager.

BenchManager will provide up-to-date ore boundaries for improved resource management, including ultimate control of bench grade to minimize rework.

Installation of Mesh infrastructure will commence in late August and onboard systems installed in September.

Diesel engine - unparalleled efficiency in the hunt to cut emissions The environmental demands on trucks are becoming steadily tougher and already this autumn, emissions will be toughened still further in Europe. Pressure for the development of environmentally optimised technology is increasing, but the answer need not lie solely with electric and hybrid solutions. Tomorrow's most energy-efficient engines are already more than a hundred years old. All the indicators are that the diesel engine still has a lot to give. Rudolf Diesel could scarcely have been aware of the historic importance of the patent application he submitted to Kaiserlichen Patentamt in Berlin in February 1892. His application bore the modest title "Neue, rationelle Wärmekraftmaschine" (New Efficient Thermal Engine), yet the invention he presented was anything but modest. Behind patent number 67207 lay a combustion engine that was far more efficient than any of the steam- or gas-powered engines that were common at the end of the 19th century. Today the diesel engine is one of the most exciting and promising technologies in the hunt for new engine solutions for an increasingly eco-aware and resource-efficient world. The reason for the diesel engine's success lies in Rudolf Diesel's original idea: to create an engine with the maximum "thermodynamic efficiency rating" - something that is achieved when as much as possible of the fuel's energy is used to propel the vehicle instead of literally going up in smoke. What is special about the diesel engine is that it compresses both air and fuel under immensely high pressure. When the fuel in the cylinder ignites owing to the heat generated by the high degree of compression, this generates the power that sets the piston in motion. The first functioning diesel engine came in 1897 and it boasted an efficiency rating of 26 percent, way beyond the mere 12 percent efficiency of the contemporary steam engine. Today's modern trucks are powered by diesel engines with an efficiency rating of about 46 percent. A significant development, to say the least. So what exactly has happened over these past decades? "The diesel engine's development can be divided into three stages. The first step was the rapid development of the fuel injection system which took place in the early 1900s. Around 1940 system pressure had increased from 300 bar to more than 700 bar, which meant combustion was both quicker and more efficient," says Maximilian Prager, expert in combustion engines at the Technical University of Munich. The second step was taken with the development of new air compressors, a component that soon became a problem since compressors at the end of the 1800s were both large and heavy. With the mechanical supercharger and later the turbine-propelled turbocharger, which Volvo Trucks was the first company to introduce in trucks with the unveiling of the TD100 in 1956, air pressure could be doubled from 2 bar to more than 4 bar. This further improved the engine's efficiency. "The most recent major step came with the development of the electronic common rail injection system at the start of the 1990s. This builds up a kind of pressure reserve that can be used to inject fuel several times per operating cycle. This both raises the power output of the engine and reduces emissions," explains Maximilian Prager. All these improvements meant that the diesel engine could strengthen its lead over other engine types. A conventional petrol engine, for instance, today offers a maximum efficiency rating of about 40 percent, which in terms of fuel consumption gives far lower overall efficiency. "In terms of the number of litres per kilometre, the diesel engine is about 20 percent more efficient than a petrol engine. For one thing, you can get ten percent more energy out of a litre of diesel than from a litre of petrol, and for another, the diesel engine operates about ten percent more efficiently than the petrol engine does," continues Maximilian Prager. The diesel engine's high energy efficiency puts it in the lead even when it comes to emissions. However, it was long regarded as "dirty" since it produced large quantities of visible smoke consisting of unburned carbon. Nonetheless, with the development of modern particle filters these emissions have been cut to a minimum. And with the latest SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology, emissions of nitrogen oxides too have been considerably reduced. Clear-cut examples of how the diesel engine has been improved over the years can be found for instance in the Volvo Trucks' engines, which in the space of just 20 years have become 100 times cleaner in terms of emissions of climate-impacting air pollutants. In parallel, power output has increased by 100 percent in 35 years. Not least the flagship Volvo FH16 with its 700 hp engine - the world's strongest truck - has succeeded in combining performance with environmental consideration in an entirely new way. The truck builds further on SCR technology but with the help of a range of new technical solutions, including a new oil thermostat, improved exhaust brake, new piston design and a new type of engine oil, it has succeeded in maintaining fuel consumption despite record-breaking power levels. "By further developing the exhaust brake, which helps reduce the burden on the wheel brakes through electronic control, we have been able to delete a number of moving parts. This results in better reliability, reduced weight and improved control," says Henrik Ask, engineer and project manager for the new D16 engine at Volvo Trucks. Through optimised combustion and improved exhaust filtration, the other engines in the latest Volvo Trucks driveline range have also been made both more fuel-efficient and cleaner than ever. For a truck with the best-selling 13-litre engine and automatic Volvo I-Shift transmission, for instance, fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions are cut by up to three percent in one single move. The new generation of engines meets the EU's new exhaust filtration standards, Euro 5, which will come into force in October this year. Among other things, these standards reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by about 40 percent compared with the previous Euro 4 standard. But if all this is already history, what can we say about the diesel engine's future? "The next 10 to 15 years will be tough for engine developers as regards the increasingly stringent exhaust emission requirements. However, I believe that for example Volvo Trucks' strategy - focusing on optimising both combustion in the engine and after-treatment of the exhaust gases - is the right way ahead. Focusing solely on combustion with high efficiency at low emissions will be too expensive," says Maximilian Prager. At the same time, there is immense potential in the new diesel technologies that are currently being developed, he feels. Biofuels can help further cut emissions. And hybrid diesels with single-point technology, where the diesel engine is optimised solely for long-distance operation, for instance, may promote both higher efficiency and lower production costs in the future. "There is immense potential in the diesel engine, primarily for large engines which have to work both hard and long. The diesel engine's high efficiency rating makes it quite simply indispensable in the development of tomorrow's engines," says Maximilian Prager....more at Minett

Engineering company Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) has been appointed to undertake the crucial engineering pre-feasibility study on building two berths in the inner harbour at Port Hedland, Western Australia. The port berths, which are being developed by the North West Iron Ore Alliance (NWIOA), are integral to the evolution of the next tier of iron ore miners, providing a practical and cost-effective way for them to export their product. SKM will undertake the study in conjunction with management consultants Evans & Peck and will form the heart of the engineering pre-feasibility study, which is due to be completed in early December.       million.

      percent from the $178.2 million recorded for the same quarter last
      year.
    - Gross margin percentage for the quarter was 27.6 percent, compared to
      35.5 percent for the corresponding period last year.
    - Excluding restructuring charges and impairment charges, earnings before
      taxes for the quarter were $0.2 million.
    - The Company posted a restructuring charge of $1.2 million related to
      further retrenchment and closedown costs and also posted a goodwill
      impairment charge of $2.0 million during the quarter.
    - Net loss (including restructuring and impairment charge) was $3.3
      million or $0.14 per share for the quarter, compared to net earnings of
      $26.3 million or $1.11 per share for the prior year quarter.
    - The Company has declared a semi-annual dividend of $0.20 per share to
      be paid on November 2, 2009.

The Company cautions that broad volatility in all aspects of its business continues and, accordingly, actual results may vary substantially from all forward-looking information in this press release. "During the quarter, activity levels were flat relative to the fourth quarter but due to the weakening U.S. dollar, the Company posted lower revenue in Canadian dollars. Market conditions during the quarter continued to be difficult and operations were still affected by ongoing delays and program cancellations. With the liquidity crisis, a large number of specialized projects, which tend to be more costly for customers than conventional projects, and where the Company has historically placed its main focus, have either been cancelled or very heavily cut back," said Francis McGuire, President and CEO of Major Drilling. "In terms of regional performance, Latin America and Canada are holding up relatively well. The Company continues to explore new opportunities to expand its geographic footprint. For instance, during the quarter, the Company started operations in Colombia. On the other hand, market conditions are much more difficult in Australia, the U.S. and Africa. During the quarter, we took further actions in Australia to restructure the operations by closing down two offices and reducing personnel. As such, the Company recorded a further restructuring charge of $1.2 million during the quarter. Australia was also affected by adverse weather conditions. Queensland, where the Company concentrates its operations, suffered its worst floods since 1974. The restructuring combined with better weather conditions should improve performance in that region going forward." "While we expect continued improvements as the year goes on, calendar 2009 will remain difficult. If customers move forward with their stated plans, we should see gradual gains as each month goes by. Despite the upward movement in commodity prices and the fund raising activity that occurred in the last few months, customers, especially the large mining companies, remain very hesitant to invest in exploration. Most of these companies are not expected to reset their budgets until next calendar year and will remain focused on cash management. Although improved, the capital markets remain challenging for junior mining companies," said Mr. McGuire. "Subsequent to the quarter, general activity levels have begun to increase. However, we expect pricing to remain competitive until utilization rates pick up significantly, especially in conventional drilling. Over time, we expect many of the supply issues that face most commodities to come back into focus and that even with moderate growth in the world economy, the need to explore and develop mines will increase. We believe that at that point, the need to develop resources in areas that are increasingly difficult to access will return, which should increase demand for specialized drilling." "The Company continues to be in an excellent financial position remaining debt-free, net of cash. Total cash level, net of long-term debt, stood at $19.2 million at quarter-end. Despite the difficult environment, the Company generated $7.6 million from operations, reduced general and administrative costs by almost 35 percent and kept net capital expenditures at only $2.4 million during the quarter," stated Mr. McGuire. "Given the Company's ability to generate cash even in these most difficult times, the Company is pleased to announce that today its Board of Directors declared its third semi-annual cash dividend of $0.20 per common share payable on November 2, 2009 to shareholders of record as of October 9, 2009. This dividend is designated as an "eligible dividend" for Canadian tax purposes," said Mr. McGuire. First quarter ended July 31, 2009 Total revenue for the quarter was $62.5 million down 64.9 percent from the $178.2 million recorded in the same quarter last year. Cancellations or delays of drilling programs, combined with price reductions, significantly affected revenue in all three regions. Revenue for the quarter from Canada-U.S. drilling operations decreased by 63.7 percent to $20.2 million compared to $55.6 million for the same period last year. Cancellations and decreased pricing impacted both countries. South and Central American revenue was at $18.2 million for the quarter, down 67.1 percent from the $55.3 million posted for the prior year quarter. During the quarter, the Company started operations in Colombia. In Ecuador operations are still on hold due to delays related to mining law implementation. Australian, Asian and African operations reported revenue of $24.1 million, down some 64.2 percent from the $67.4 million reported in the same period last year. Cancellation of drilling programs and severe weather issues impacted revenue in Australia. Indonesia was affected by a reduction in drilling programs and pricing while Mongolian revenue continued to be down compared to last year as the mining industry awaited the final passage of that country's mining laws. The overall gross margin percentage for the quarter was 27.6 percent, down from 35.5 percent for the same period last year. Reduced pricing due to increased competitive pressures and delays significantly impacted margins. Pricing dropped by more than 20 percent overall since October 2008 but the Company has been able to recapture some of this loss through productivity gains and cost cutting. Finally, weather issues in Australia impacted margins, especially in the energy sector. General and administrative costs were $8.9 million for the quarter, down 33.6 percent compared to $13.4 million in the same period last year. The decrease was due to cost cutting initiatives implemented in November and February. Other expenses for the quarter were $0.9 million, down from $3.8 million in the prior year quarter, due primarily to lower incentive compensation expenses given the Company's decreased profitability in the current year. Foreign exchange gain in the quarter was $0.7 million compared to a loss of $0.2 million in the prior year quarter. Short-term interest revenue was flat at $0.1 million compared to the same quarter last year, while interest expense on long-term debt was down to $0.3 million compared to $0.6 million for the same quarter last year due to lower levels of debt and reduced interest rates. Amortization expense was $7.7 million for the quarter compared to $7.6 million for the same quarter last year, as a result of the increased direct investment in equipment. During the quarter, the Company recorded a restructuring charge of $1.2 million to account for retrenchment and closedown costs primarily in Australia. Also, the Company recorded a net non-cash goodwill impairment charge of $2.0 million. This eliminated goodwill of $3.7 million recorded on the Paragon del Ecuador S.A. acquisition, offset by a reduction of a holdback of $1.7 million, which was a contingent consideration to the purchase price and dependant on the political situation in Ecuador. The goodwill impairment charge resulted from political issues and uncertainty still affecting the mining industry in Ecuador. Income tax expense was $0.2 million in the quarter compared to $11.5 million for the prior year quarter. Tax expense for the quarter was impacted by the non-recognition or reversal of tax losses in Ecuador and losses in Tanzania. Net loss for the quarter was $3.3 million or $0.14 per share ($0.14 per share diluted) compared to net earnings of $26.3 million or $1.11 per share ($1.10 per share diluted) in the prior year period.     NOTES TO INTERIM CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (UNAUDITED)
    FOR THE PERIODS ENDED JULY 31, 2009 AND 2008

    1. BASIS OF PRESENTATION
    ------------------------

These interim consolidated financial statements were prepared using accounting policies and methods consistent with those used in the preparation of the Company's audited consolidated financial statements for the year ended April 30, 2009, except for the adoption of new accounting policies as disclosed in Note 2 below. These interim consolidated financial statements conform in all respects to the requirements of Canadian generally accepted accounting principles for annual financial statements, with the exception of certain note disclosures. As a result, these interim consolidated financial statements should be read in conjunction with the Company's audited consolidated financial statements and notes for the year ended April 30, 2009 contained in the Company's 2009 annual report.

    2. CHANGES IN ACCOUNTING POLICIES
    ---------------------------------

Goodwill and Intangible Assets Effective May 1, 2009 the Company adopted the new CICA Handbook Section 3064, Goodwill and Intangible Assets, which establishes standards for recognition, measurement, presentation and disclosure of goodwill subsequent to its initial recognition and of intangible assets. Standards concerning goodwill are unchanged from the standards included in the previous CICA Handbook Section 3062. The adoption of this new standard did not have a material impact on the Company's consolidated financial statements.

    3. FUTURE ACCOUNTING CHANGES
    ----------------------------

Business combinations In January 2009, the CICA issued Section 1582, Business Combinations, which replaces Section 1581 of the same title. This Section applies prospectively to business combinations for which the date of acquisition is in fiscal years beginning on or after January 1, 2011. The Section establishes standards for accounting for a business combination. The Company is currently evaluating the impact of the adoption of this new Section on its consolidated financial statements. Consolidated financial statements and non-controlling interests In January 2009, the CICA issued Section 1601, Consolidated Financial Statements, and Section 1602, Non-Controlling Interests, which together replace Section 1600, Consolidated Financial Statements. These sections apply to interim and annual consolidated financial statements for fiscal years beginning on or after January 1, 2011. They establish standards for the preparation of consolidated financial statements and accounting for a non-controlling interest in a subsidiary in the consolidated financial statements subsequent to a business combination. The Company is currently evaluating the impact of the adoption of these new Sections on its consolidated financial statements. International Financial Reporting Standards ("IFRS") In February 2008, the Accounting Standards Board ("AcSB") confirmed that the use of IFRS will be required in 2011 for publicly accountable enterprises in Canada. In April 2008, the AcSB issued an IFRS Omnibus Exposure draft proposing that publicly accountable enterprises be required to apply IFRS, in full and without modification, on January 1, 2011 for companies with a calendar year end, therefore the transition date for the Company is May 1, 2011. This will require the restatement, for comparative purposes, of amounts reported by the Company for its year ended April 30, 2011, and of the opening balance sheet as at May 1, 2010. The Company is currently in the process of developing a conversion implementation plan and assessing the impacts of the conversion on the consolidated financial statements and disclosures of the Company.

    4. SEASONALITY OF OPERATIONS
    ----------------------------

The Company's operations tended to exhibit a seasonal pattern whereby its fourth quarter (February to April) was its strongest. With the exception of the third quarter, the Company has, over the past several years, exhibited comparatively less seasonality in quarterly revenue. The third quarter (November to January) is normally the Company's weakest quarter due to the shutdown of mining and exploration activities, often for extended periods, over the holiday season, particularly in South and Central America. With the current economic and industry downturn ongoing, it is not yet clear whether or not the Company's revenue will return to more historical seasonal patterns, or whether a recent lack of seasonality will continue.

    5. RESTRUCTURING CHARGE
    -----------------------

The Company initiated a restructuring plan in fiscal year 2009 to standardize the drilling equipment fleet and reduce operating costs by rationalizing the workforce and business locations. These initiatives have generated a total restructuring charge of $10,263, of which $1,220 was expensed in the first quarter ending July 31, 2009, the balance having been previously expensed. The current quarter charges include $594 for severance, $204 for lease terminations and $422 for other relocation expenses mainly relating to the closure of two regional offices in Australia. On July 31, 2009, accounts payable included $1,110 of restructuring charges not paid.

    6. GOODWILL IMPAIRMENT
    ----------------------

During the quarter, the Company recorded a net non-cash goodwill impairment charge of $2,032. This eliminated goodwill of $3,722 recorded on the Paragon del Ecuador S.A. acquisition offset by a reduction of a holdback of $1,690, which was a contingent consideration to the purchase price and dependant on the political situation in Ecuador. The goodwill impairment charge resulted from political issues and uncertainty still affecting the mining industry in Ecuador and therefore the inability of this region to generate the expected revenue.

    7. BUSINESS ACQUISITION
    -----------------------

Effective August 1, 2008 the Company acquired the assets of the exploration drilling company Forage à Diamant Benoît Ltée ("Benoît") based in Val-d'Or, Québec. Through this purchase, Major Drilling acquired 19 drill rigs, support equipment and inventory, existing contracts and personnel. The purchase price for the transaction was $23,117, including customary working capital adjustments, financed by cash and debt. The net assets acquired at fair market value at acquisition are as follows:

    8. INVENTORY
    ------------

The cost of inventory recognized as an expense and included in direct cost for the three months ended July 31, 2009 was $9,493. During the period, there were no significant write downs of inventory as a result of net realizable value being lower than cost and no inventory write downs recognized in previous periods were reversed. The Company's credit facility related to operations is in part secured by a general assignment of the Company's inventory.

    10. CAPITAL MANAGEMENT
    ----------------------

The Company includes shareholders' equity (excluding accumulated other comprehensive loss), long-term borrowings and demand credit facility net of cash in the definition of capital. Total managed capital was as follows:

The Company's objective when managing its capital structure is to maintain financial flexibility in order to: i) preserve access to capital markets; ii) meet financial obligations; and iii) finance internally generated growth and potential new acquisitions. To manage its capital structure, the Company may adjust spending, issue new shares, issue new debt or repay existing debt. Under the terms of certain of the Company's debt agreements, the Company must satisfy certain financial covenants. Such agreements also limit, among other things, the Company's ability to incur additional indebtedness, create liens, engage in mergers or acquisitions and make dividend and other payments. During the period, the Company was, and continues to be, in compliance with all covenants and other conditions imposed by its debt agreements. In order to facilitate the management of its capital requirements, the Company prepares annual budgets that are updated as necessary, dependent on various factors. The Company's objectives with regards to capital management remain unchanged from 2009.

    11. FINANCIAL INSTRUMENTS
    -------------------------

Fair value The carrying values of cash, accounts receivable and accounts payable and accrued charges approximate their fair value due to the relatively short period to maturity of the instruments. Long-term debt has a carrying value of $33,036 as at July 31, 2009 (April 30, 2009 - $38,556) and also approximates its fair market value. Risk management The Company is exposed to various risks related to its financial assets and liabilities. There have been no substantive changes in the Company's exposure to financial instrument risks, its objectives, policies and processes for managing those risks, or the methods used to measure them, from previous periods, unless otherwise stated in this note. Credit risk The Company is exposed to credit risk from its accounts receivable. The Company has adopted a policy of dealing only with creditworthy counterparties and obtaining sufficient collateral where appropriate, as a means of mitigating the risk of financial loss from defaults. It carries out, on a continuing basis, credit checks on its customers and maintains provisions for contingent credit losses. The Company also diversifies its credit risk by dealing with a large number of customers in various countries. Demand for the Company's drilling services depends upon the level of mineral exploration and development activities conducted by mining companies, particularly with respect to gold, nickel and copper. The Company's five largest customers account for 34% (22% in 2009) of total quarterly revenue, with no one customer representing more than 10% of its revenue for 2010 or 2009. The carrying amounts for accounts receivable are net of allowances for doubtful accounts, which are estimated based on aging analysis of receivables, past experience, specific risks associated with the customer and other relevant information. The maximum exposure to credit risk is the carrying value of the financial assets. As at July 31, 2009, 68.1% of the Company's trade receivables are aged as current (under 30 days) and 4.2% of the trade receivables are impaired. Credit risk also arises from cash and cash equivalents and deposits with banks and financial institutions. This risk is limited because the counterparties are banks with high credit ratings assigned by international credit-rating agencies. The Company does not enter into derivatives to manage credit risk. Interest rate risk The demand loan and long-term debt of the Company bear a floating rate of interest, which exposes the Company to interest rate fluctuations. As at July 31, 2009 the Company has estimated that a one percentage point increase in interest rates would have caused a quarterly decrease in net income of approximately $66 and a one percentage decrease in interest rates would have caused a quarterly increase in net income of $66. Foreign currency risk Foreign currency risk arises as the Company has operations located internationally where local operational currency is not the same as the functional currency of the Company. A significant portion of the Company's operations are located outside of Canada. The accounting impact of foreign currency exposure is minimized since the operations are classified as self-sustaining operations. In certain developing countries, the Company mitigates its risk of large exchange rate fluctuations by conducting business primarily in U.S. dollars. U.S. dollar revenue exposure is partially mitigated by offsetting U.S. dollar labour and material expenses. Monetary assets denominated in foreign currencies are exposed to foreign currency fluctuations. Based on the Company's foreign currency net monetary exposures as at July 31, 2009, and assuming that all other variables remain constant, a 10% rise or fall in the Canadian dollar against the other foreign currencies would have resulted in increases (decreases) in the net earnings and comprehensive earnings as follows:

Liquidity risk Liquidity risk arises from the Company's management of working capital, the finance charges and principal repayments on its debt instruments. The risk is that the Company would not be able to meet its financial obligations as they become due. The Company manages liquidity risk by maintaining adequate reserves, banking facilities and reserve borrowing facilities, by continuously monitoring forecast and actual cash flows and matching the maturity profiles of financial assets and liabilities.
