GEORGETOWN, KY -- Minova Americas, a leading supplier of underground mine consumables and technology in the U.S., Canada and Latin America, today announced expansion of its family of ventilation seals to include a new material that can be placed and obtain the required 120-psi strength in just three days. "This new product will be a significant advantage for our customers," said Steve Tadolini, PhD, Director of Research & Development for Minova Americas. "It is common for mines to experience rapid build-up of dangerous gasses behind sealed-off areas. To overcome potential safety hazards associated with these build-ups, and to enable work to continue more quickly around newly sealed areas, our R&D team has developed a Tekseal® that cures in only three days." Ventilation has always been a concern in underground mines. For many years, there was very little understanding of how ventilation could be used to remove harmful contaminants from the air, or how to control airflow and isolate worked-out areas. As early as the 14^th century, miners recognized that lack of air was a major impediment to the expansion of mines. The common solution then was to abandon a mine and simply start a new one nearby. When it was realized that mines didn't have to be abandoned but rather could be ventilated, a variety of solutions were developed and employed, including those in use in modern operations. Today, ventilation schemes typically consist of a complex network of open and sealed areas that provide fresh air to working faces while pushing dusty and gaseous air out of the mine. But even in the most controlled environments, mined-out areas continue to generate dangerous methane gases. Continuous ventilation of these areas can strain fan systems and is not practical for continuously monitoring mines in operation for 30 years or more. In addition to the new 3-day cure for Tekseal®, Minova also unveiled new packaging that allows bulk handling of its standard-setting Tekseal® products. "This will make it easier and faster to transport materials and minimize the physical requirements of seal construction," Dr. Tadolini explained. The new Minova bulk bags, constructed of a reinforced nylon material with a heavy-duty plastic liner, are tear- and water-resistant. The bulk bags can be placed above the placer unit to provide material previously contained in individual 45-lb bags. "Handling thousands of 45-lb bags for large seals in a confined space can cause slipping and stumbling accidents as well as serious back injuries," Dr. Tadolini noted. A Minova bulk bag contains the equivalent of a full pallet of individual bags and requires no manual handling. An added safety feature is the significant reduction in airborne dust and waste material handling. The Minova bulk system also reduces the time and labor required to install a seal and helps to ensure a consistent mix. Caterpillar is introducing the Cat Integrated Object Detection System^TM, designed to enhance mine site safety. The system was developed after extensive research by Caterpillar showed that 70% of haulage truck accidents at mine sites occur during initial machine startup and low speed movement. The system has been purpose-built to integrate with Cat large mining trucks-models 785, 789, 793 and 797-and is intended to aid an operator when starting to move a truck and during low speed maneuvering. It combines cameras, radar, and alarms to notify the operator when an object is close to the machine but not in the operator's field of vision. A display screen in the cab provides visual confirmation of the objects detected by radar, which enables the operator to make informed decisions when moving a truck. The system is integrated with VIMS^TM and other on-board computers, enabling it to switch into camera-only mode when the machine travels beyond 66 feet (20 meters). Using a combination of short range radars, medium range radars and four cameras, the system monitors and shows the operator the areas immediately around the truck. The radar information is processed by a new on-board touch screen display, which alerts the operator with a visual indication followed by an audible alarm if the truck is put into gear. The cameras enable the operator to identify what the radars detect. Unlike basic camera systems, the Cat Integrated Object Detection System provides the operator with multiple types of warnings, both audible and visual. Three different levels of alarms indicate the proximity of an object or the urgency of taking action to avoid an object. Simple, automatic and robust The system is wholly contained on the machine and does not require any off-board infrastructure. The system is scalable, allowing miners to start with just the four cameras and add radars later. And the touch screen interface is easy to learn, which minimizes training time. The system works automatically. Turning on the machine provides power to the Cat Integrated Object Detection System. When the machine stops, the system goes to active mode, and it goes into camera-only mode after the machine travels beyond the coverage area (66 feet /20 meters). Once the machine is again at a complete stop, the radar system reactivates. Of course radar detects both moving and still objects, and camera views are available at all times. Additionally, any critical zone warning that has not been acknowledged will trigger an audible alarm. When the audible alarm is active the camera view will switch automatically to the zone that has a detected object. In the event of multiple objects, the camera view will toggle between camera views in zones with objects. The components are robust and proven in the mining environment. Radars used include both short range radars, which detect objects as far away as 23 feet (7 meters), and medium range radars, which have a range of 66 feet (20 meters). The Cat Integrated Object Detection System will be available for many current models of large mining trucks in early 2010. The system will be available for new F-Series mining trucks in mid 2010. The body and chassis of every Cat^® Mining Truck are designed to work together flawlessly as an integrated unit to assure low-cost-per-ton operation with optimal payloads, proper weight distribution, overall durability, safe handling and a smooth ride. Reflecting this precise body/chassis match is the new Gateless Coal Body designed for the 777F Mining Truck. The new coal-specific body significantly enhances 777F performance in coal applications, while eliminating the many disadvantages of bodies that are field-modified to increase capacity. The new 777F Gateless Coal Body joins a family of coal-specific bodies available for the Cat 785, 789 and 793 Mining Trucks. Multiple body sizes are available for each model, allowing a productive match with any of the various coal densities encountered in worldwide mining operations. These bodies are also available as replacement upgrades for certain prior series models. As an example, the 777F Gateless Coal Body is compatible with 777D Mining Trucks. The Gateless Coal Body is a precisely engineered alternative to the practice of increasing the capacity of conventional, heavy-duty bodies by adding side-board extensions and after-market tailgates. The Gateless Coal Body combines a robust understructure-modeled after the successful design of the Cat MSDII (Mine Specific Design) body-with a floor that angles upward toward the rear for nearly two-thirds of the body length. The precise geometry of the long, sloped floor positively retains the load and results in hauling target payloads consistently with minimal spillage. In addition, the relatively low height (compared with many sideboards on field-modified bodies) greatly increases loading efficiency for faster cycles. The coal-specific design also provides an excellent weight split between the axles, maintaining the designed-in center of gravity, which, in turn, preserves engineered handling characteristics, assures optimum tire life and reduces stress on drive-train components. The Gateless Coal Body also provides the optimum ratio of structural weight to payload capacity-in contrast to field modified bodies, including those using aftermarket tailgates. To verify the payload potential and weight balance of the 777F Mining Truck fitted with the Gateless Coal Body, Caterpillar conducted a production and load-distribution study with three 777F trucks: one fitted with a conventional heavy-duty body with sideboard extensions; the second with sideboard extensions and an aftermarket tailgate; and the third with a Gateless Coal Body. The 777F equipped with the Gateless Coal Body consistently carried 25 percent more payload than the truck with sideboards, and 7 percent more than the model with sideboards and tailgate. In addition to higher payloads, the Gateless Coal Body demonstrated ideal weight splits. In contrast, the empty and loaded weight splits of the tailgated truck were significantly rearward. Houston, TX, October 13 , 2009 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, earlier this year was awarded a contract valued over $19 million by Copper Mountain Mining Corp., to deliver energy efficient drive systems for the Copper Mountain Mining project in Canada. The order was booked during the first quarter of 2009.Located in Southern British Columbia, the Copper Mountain mine had produced 1.7 billion pounds of copper before it closed in 1996. Copper Mountain is building a new mill and reopening the mine, with production expected to begin in 2011. Annual production is estimated at 105 million pounds of copper in the first five years.

ABB’s scope of supply for the project includes three variable speed drive systems for a dual pinion semiautogenous (SAG) mill and two ball mills. Each low speed drive system has power of 2 x 8500 HP at 200 rpm. ABB is also providing MV ACS6000 multidrives, motors and transformers as well as an E-house including motor control center (MCC) and control systems for the mill auxiliary, and related project and engineering services. Variable speed operation optimizes the grinding process and is ideal for ores with varying grinding properties. This leads to significant optimization potential for the plant design, as well as for its operation. Variable speed drives use less electricity, providing significant energy and operating cost savings, as well as high system efficiency and high system availability. “Innovative energy saving ABB technologies, such as our variable speed drive systems, combined with our industry knowledge and experience, provide our minerals and mining customers with the solutions and support they need to significantly improve their productivity, energy efficiency and process reliability,” said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division. ABB’s variable speed mill drives use direct torque control (DTC) to deliver precise and strong torque control during start up and during cascading of the material. Oliver's Two New Smelter Boots Provide Aluminium Smelting & Hot Metal Industry Safety

Oliver Footwear has completed the development of two new Safety Boots specially designed for the international aluminium smelter industry, which are also expected to become the preferred choice for the foundry, other 'hot metal' heavy duty high heat industrial environments. The two new boots, designated Oliver Smelter Boots Style Number 25-298 and 25-299 have resulted from an eighteen month long product development, testing and evaluation process involving several Australian smelters before undergoing a final evaluation process conducted in conjunction with the Boyne Smelters Limited at Gladstone in Queensland. Boyne Smelters, a member of the Rio Tinto Alcan Group is Australia's largest aluminium smelter producing more than half a million tonnes of aluminium a year, created an internal product evaluation team involving their safety, occupational health and hygiene personnel to review the preferred solutions they were seeking from their protective equipment. Oliver Footwear spokesman Stuart Hull says "Boyne Smelters were keen to have access to a Smelter Boot which would have very high levels of personal comfort and safe protection for their smelter operations personnel. "Also the boot needed to have a Type 1 non-magnetic safety protective toe cap due to the strong magnetic fields and the electrical conductivity which exist in the immediate smelter area as well as providing reduced fatigue levels. "This required Oliver to develop both a lightweight protective non-magnetic aluminium toe cap with the traditional Oliver wide profile with an internal latex cushion liner which ensures toes are comfortable and not in contact with the cap. "In conjunction with Carl Watt the Site Safety Specialist and Sharon Catford (OHN) at the Boyne Smelter Oliver developed a range of product specifications which could also address the comfort issues. "In fact we were able to draw upon specific comfort features from the market leading Oliver All Terrain (AT) range which could be incorporated in both new Smelter Boots" Hull says. Carl Watt confirms that "while previous smelter boots met our required safety standards they did not match operator expectations in terms of comfort. "Oliver Footwear was very proactive in working with us to enhance the operator comfort and we are very pleased with the solutions which have emerged." The comfort features include Oliver's unique COMFORTcushion which combines cellular urethane and PORON to protect both the heel and the ball of the foot and through its constant impact absorption helps reduce foot, leg and lower back fatigue. The inclusion of a NANOLITE foot bed also provides greater comfort and well being as the raised surface section of the foot bed massages the foot by movement, promoting greater blood flow to also reduce fatigue. The new Oliver Smelter Boots are produced with a high quality heat resistant and flame retardant black leather upper with a quick release Velcro closure. All critical seams of the Boots incorporate three rows of heavy duty Kevlar stitching for increased strength with the outsole of the Boot resistant to 300 degrees C of surface contact. Smelter Boots are also required to be dip tested in 960 degrees C of molten aluminium for three seconds. The Boot was also required to have a number of specific features including a sole that is slip resistant with superior resistance to cuts, as well as resistant to mineral oils and acids and organic oils and fats. The slight difference in Style Numbers also reflects that Oliver Style No 25-299 offers a Metatarsal Guard which affords further protection against impact on the leading edge of the foot. Each boot also has a TECtuff toe guard which protects the front edge of the Boot, which also has a padded collar and a full lining internally. The new Oliver Smelter Boots are produced in sizes from 5 to 15 with half size increments from 6½ to 10½. Oliver Footwear's Stuart Hull says "news of Oliver's customer focussed development process and the features of the new Smelter Boots has quickly permeated the international smelter industry and Oliver has already sold the new Boots to the SOHAR Aluminium Smelter in Oman which commenced production in June 2008 with a targeted annual output of 350,000 tonnes of aluminium. Eriez Adds State-of-the-Art Robotic Welder to Support its Erie Workforce

Erie, Pa. -Eriez^®, world authority in advanced technology for magnetic, vibratory and inspection applications, today announced the purchase of a sophisticated robotic welder designed to improve efficiency, maintain accuracy and more quickly and economically meet increasing production volumes, according to Tim Shuttleworth, President and CEO. Shuttleworth went on to say, "With August being a record month for order bookings, this capital equipment will be instantly utilized." To help determine if the technology was right for Eriez, the engineering team obtained a robotic welder test unit with the support of a local Erie vendor to evaluate it. The company used it to help with a very large vibratory feeder order. "A component in the feeder drive lends itself to be done automatically," explains John Miles, Director of Operations. The unit quickly proved its value. "It can complete 14 in one hour whereas only four of the same components can be completed manually in that same time," he said. After analyzing the unit for three weeks, the engineering team determined that an even larger and more advanced unit would be best for Eriez' needs. For cost justification, Eriez sent its vibratory feeder trays to the robot welder manufacturer. Testing proved that the unit Eriez planned to purchase would be capable of completing 90 percent of the company's vibratory trays. Robotic welders offer a wide variety of advantages. Welds are more consistent and meticulous when performed by robots. Productivity and speed are improved, while there is also a significant cost savings. Eriez' robotic welder will arrive in November. The engineering team and welders are currently collaborating with the local Erie vendor to optimize the unit's simulation software and determine other applications where the unit can be used. Eriez' staff of welders will continue to be responsible for welding jobs that require an extraordinary amount of skill and customization, while the robotic welder will handle standardized tasks. Watzman points at this year’s safety record for coal mining, which, to date, is set to make 2009 the third consecutive year of steadily declining fatalities in the nation’s mines. Mining company, UK Coal has been awarded the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard after taking action to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations. It achieved a 45% absolute reduction in its carbon footprint over the past three years, which represents a greenhouse gas reduction of 980,000 t of CO₂. “The measures we have taken clearly demonstrate UK Coal’s full commitment to reduce our own carbon footprint and support for national objective of cutting emissions of greenhouse gases”, says Chief Executive Jon Lloyd. Company Announcement to the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority No. 20-2009, 30 October 2009 FLSmidth has been awarded a contract worth approximately 35m euros (DKK 260m) from Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd. - a wholly owned subsidiary of the Tata Power Company Ltd. - for the supply and construction of a coal handling system for the company's Ultra Mega Power Plant project in the state of Gujarat, India. Tata Power Company Ltd. is India's largest private power utility. Date: 30.10.2009 The scope of the supply includes a complete coal handling system to convey coal from a jetty to a stockpile and from there to the power plant. The system has a 6800 tonnes per hour stockpiling capacity and 4500 tonnes per hour reclaiming capacity. Apart from one of the world's largest bucket wheel stacker-reclaimers for coal, the system also includes a series of conveyors of high speed and high capacity. FLSmidth has previously received two material handling orders from the Tata Power Company Ltd. The first came in 2006 and was followed by another in 2008. "Material handling systems and products is the fastest growing segment of FLSmidth's portfolio and this contract demonstrates our capability of meeting the strictest requirements of a wide spectrum of industries, including infrastructure sectors such as ports and energy," Group CEO Jørgen Huno Rasmussen comments. Celtic Energy are the leading coal mining operators in South Wales, with four surface coal mining sites - Selar, Nant Helen, Margam and East Pit - producing in excess of 1 million tonnes of high-quality coal each year for domestic, industrial and electrical-generation demand in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. Last year, due to favourable market conditions, preliminary works began to reopen the company's East Pit site, which had lain dormant since 2001 and, as a result, had accumulated a large body of water in the existing excavated void. Metso were contacted with a view to assisting with the dewatering of the pit and, once dewatered, providing a permanent installation to maintain the lowered water level. The rate of dewatering requested was 800m3/h with the total differential head starting at 110m and increasing to 160m at the pit floor. The 'dirty' water removed would be pumped to existing water-treatment facilities before being discharged from the site....more at Metso The water level at Celtic Energy's East Pit site on 15 December 2008.
