In China, the NDRC has announced a RMB0.028/kWh ($0.04/kWh) power tariff rise for non-residential use. The rise in power costs for the Chinese aluminium smelters that buy power from the grid (accounting for ~45% of Chinese production) highlights the main bullish argument for aluminium prices over the medium term - the outlook for rising costs (particularly energy). While the supply/demand fundamentals for aluminium are clearly weak, rising demand and costs look set to support prices over the medium term. (more…)

FLSmidth has signed a contract worth approximately USD 40m (approximately DKK 200m) with state owned LILIAMA Vietnam Machinery Installation Corporation for the supply of a coal handling facility, including ship unloading and storage facilities with a capacity of 400,000 tons, for a coal-fired power plant owned by Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam). The plant is located in the Ha Tinh province in Vietnam, approximately 400 km south of Hanoi. The scope of the contract includes complete engineering, design and supply of all key components as well as supervision of erection and commissioning. Among the equipment is approximately 8 km of conveyors. "Vietnam is a well-known market to FLSmidth and we have delivered numerous material handling solutions to various industries in the country over the past decade. This contract therefore further strengthens FLSmidth's presence and position in the region," Group CEO Jørgen Huno Rasmussen comments.

The Kiruna truck also offers reduced noise levels in the confined underground workings. The measured outside noise level at maximum output is 85-90 dBA in the mine – appreciated not only by the operator but also by the miners working in the vicinity. Electric power also allows easy and smooth stop/start operations with less strain on the operator and truck components. A 75 kW Tier 3 diesel engine automatically starts up for off line duties such as loading, dumping and turning sites. In passing areas no complicated overhead trolley lines are required. Vale Inco’s reopening of Totten mine is a $400 million project and the first new Vale Inco mine in Sudbury in 35 years. Work began on the reopening of the mine in 2007, with production scheduled to commence in 2010. The revived Totten mine has a projected life span of 20 years and will create 150 employment opportunities. ABB Canada’s scope of supply for Totten mine includes a full suite of power and automation solutions, starting at the surface 69 kV substation with high voltage breakers, relay protection and control; medium voltage switchgear; a microSCADA system; a remote control connection to the Vale Inco Power Department; two mine hoists — one medium voltage and one low voltage; and all motors, drives, motor control centres and instrumentation throughout the mine surface plants and underground. Underground airflow and quality will be controlled with a state-of-the-art ventilation on-demand system. Also supplied are underground mobile substations and underground field bus connected devices and controllers. The entire scope of supply is seamlessly integrated together with ABB’s Industrial IT - 800xA automation system. The ventilation on-demand system under the scope of ABB will utilize advanced realtime asset tracking technology and intelligent airflow systems for optimal performance. The system is designed to dilute and remove hazardous substances, control the thermal environment, and provide oxygen for humans and mobile equipment engine combustion. The ventilation on-demand system will optimize energy management of the entire mine through automation. ABB’s project execution and engineering was done by ABB’s North American Mining Centre of Excellence in Montreal, Canada, and included an overall project manager and one site manager in place to lead the total and site efforts, respectively. ABB’s mining group in Montreal is responsible for all mining solutions in Canada, the United States and Mexico. The equipment ABB supplied to Totten mine was manufactured in various factories around the globe, with some significant contributions from local Sudbury- and Canadian-based suppliers. Most of the major equipment has been delivered to site and is operational or in various stages of commissioning. “ABB has enabled innovation in our core business on the Totten Mine Project,” said John Sagman, Vale Inco senior project manager. “ABB has brought the latest technology and expertise forward as their contribution to our unified project team.” The project has never suffered a lost time accident or a disabling injury. It is on schedule with completion slated for the second quarter of 2011 and is within the approved budget.

Improvements to the I-Site Studio 3.3 laser scan modelling software are designed to streamline routine mine surveying tasks. Automatic toe and crest detection saves time in open pit surveys. Surveyors can easily update mine models, which can also be made available for both mine planners on site and regulatory authorities. This builds on the open pit update tool in I-Site Studio 3.2, which allows users to scan selected sections of a pit and integrate the new data into the current pit model. A new global registration tool uses a single step process to register multiple scans and objects together. This saves time for surveyors, who previously had to match pairs of objects/data. Accuracy is also increased because fewer registrations means fewer chances for error. This tool is especially useful with the new Maptek I-Site Vehicle System, where the scanner is mounted on mine site vehicles. Another enhancement for the vehicle system allows users to register scans by back-bearing of alignment angle. Viewing sections through laser scan data is now easier, with an interactive tool which allows users to arbitrarily place and manipulate sections planes. I-Site Studio 3.3 incorporates many user suggestions - for example, surveyors have specifically asked to be able to label elevations on generated contour lines - a standard mapping task made even easier. CiDRA supplies more for the Los Pelambres expansion

CiDRA Minerals Processing has been awarded, through Bechtel Chile Ltda, an additional contract to supply SONARtrac^® process monitoring systems to Minera Los Pelambres in Chile. CiDRA has been involved in all phases of this expansion project at Los Pelambres, and will now be providing critical flow measurements on tailings lines within the Mauro tailings dam, and as well, on critical slurry lines within the concentrator plant, all integrally working within the Los Pelambres expansion project awarded to Bechtel. Specifically, this win for CiDRA is part of the Repowering Project - Minera Los Pelambres. This $1 billion plant expansion will increase plant throughput from the current 145,000 t/d to 175,000 t/d. The project was 84% complete by October of 2009 and on schedule for completion by the end of 2009. The EPCM is being performed by Bechtel Chile, the same company that designed and constructed the original plant, working with CiDRA as a supplier on all phases of the expansion project. (more…)

Atlas Copco is now introducing the latest technology in micropiling - the MAI SDA T111, a self-drilling micropile that drills and reinforces the hole in one single process. The MAI SDA T111 consists of a 111 mm (4.37") diameter hollow threaded rod with a sacrificial drill bit. Thanks to extension couplings, the system offers a flexibility to easily adjust the rod length to the site requirements. This is especially useful if piling has to be performed in a confined workspace, for example with limited head room which is often the case in underpinning. MAI SDA installation with simultaneous grouting

MAI SDA T111 self-drilling micropiles can be installed with most tophammer rigs, for example the compact Atlas Copco Mustang rigs. With only light equipment needed for installation of the SDA micropiles and with no need to use large concrete mixing trucks, less impact is made on the surrounding area in terms of exhaust fumes, noise pollution and vibrations. "The T111 is primarily aimed at unconsolidated soil formations such as sand and gravel, and is ideal for difficult micropiling", says Steve Greer, Vice President Geotechnical business at Atlas Copco. Atlas Copco optimistic for the future after tough year

There was a different atmosphere at this year’s Atlas Copco lunch for the mining and construction press in London yesterday. A year previously a great deal of uncertainty loomed over the industry. At that meeting, Björn Rosengren, Senior Executive Vice President for Atlas Copco and Business Area President for Construction and Mining Technique had suggested that his construction business might fare better in 2009 than mining. Yesterday he freely admitted that things had not worked out that way and that mining, accounting for about 60% of the business had done better than construction. He opined that he was “quite optimistic for the mining business.” He also suggested that business growth would restart after a year of no activity - expecting 2/3 from organic growth and 1/3 through acquisition. Through the day’s presentations, the importance of parts and service was stressed by the Atlas Copco people gathered with the press. This sector of the business had held up well in 2009 and is to receive even greater focus going forward. (more…)

Simulator training provides new operators with a feel for how equipment is expected to work without fear of damaging real equipment and risking human life, says simulator supplier ThoroughTec. Since the inclusion of the Atlas Copco Rocket Boomer 282 and Sandvik Toro 007 LHD simulator cabs into South Deep's training procedure, operators become competent after a week and a  half of classroom, simulator and practical training, under the guidance of South Deep's chief training officer, Slang Maré, and training superintendent Eddie Stonehouse. South Deep's simulators are not only used to train new  operators, but they are also used to provide refresher courses for experienced operators, so that correct operational, driving and safety procedures can be monitored, without having to decommission equipment in the field. At the heart of ThoroughTec's Cybermine is the simulated cab, which has simulated instruments and controls mounted on a motion platform to provide  accurate motion perception cues. The cab area is surrounded by a wide-angle, high-resolution projection display system coupled to surround sound audio. Control of all training aspects is exercised in real time from an instructor station. The entire system is in a container, which also facilitates ease of transport. Instructors are able to set up and modify standard exercises, change environmental conditions, include people and other vehicles in the simulated world and inject faults and emergency situations at the touch of a button. The exercise can be recorded to compare historical data and provide reviews for student debriefing and classroom participation. "Safety is a key issue in the mining industry, more so than most other industries, simply because of the dangers linked to mining and it is with this  philosophy that we find ourselves working with South Deep, where simulators play a vital role in both safety and productivity,"  says ThoroughTec executive  director Dr John Waltham.

This includes both Group II and M1 Certification. NLT was issued with the Certificate of approvals by the Physical Technical Testing Institute on November 20th, 2009. NLT continues to pursue MSHA approvals for the North American markets. All products sold in Europe for use in hazardous or potentially explosive atmospheres must have the ATEX (Intrinsically Safe) approval. Outside the EU, the IECex approval is widely used. This allows for sales in Europe and participating IEC Standards countries like New South Wales Australia. IEC 62013 is the Cap Lamp Standard, and has been the certification NLT has received in the past. It is the minimum requirement for use in coal mines. With the additional certification to M1, a first for NLT, it allows the user to continue using the lamp even after methane has been detected. Previously, the lamp (and miner) needed to exit the mine immediately. This is useful for Mine Rescue workers and those who remain in, or enter the mine to correct the problems that caused the high gas levels. Sadly, on December 7 Hungary’s parliament voted for a ban on all cyanide-based mining technologies on Hungarian territory. The bill which was initiated by Cyanide-Free Hungary, a group that, like so many NGOs, perhaps does not allow sensible scientific principles to guide things. Perhaps it should be known as the Jobs-Free Hungary coalition! By contrast, good sense prevailed in Slovakia where the proposal of SDKU-DS MP Jarmila Tkacova will not proceed to the second reading, as members of the parliament rejected her amendment to the mining law. Under the initiative, a 12-year moratorium on mining of radioactive materials would have been imposed. The amendment to the mining law, which was sponsored by an opposition MP, was submitted also in connection with Greenpeace’s petition asking for a ban on uranium mining in Slovakia. (more…)

Largest trommel built by Multotec joins other group products at Mandena, Madagascar

As IM’s special annual South African feature is prepared for publication in the January issue, comes news that the largest self-driven trommel ever built by Multotec has been successfully commissioned at QMM’s Mandena mine in Madagascar where it is installed in the mine’s heavy minerals process plant. The trommel has the same diameter as the one Multotec manufactured for Hillendale more than ten years ago, but it is far longer. This massive trommel has a 3.5 m diameter, is 15 m in length and weighs just under 50 t. It will process 3,200 t/h of dry solids or 5,943 m³/h of heavy minerals slurry. Alcoa chose Metso for the reliability and effectiveness of its solutions, already present in bauxite mining operations in Brazil. Alcoa's bauxite mine in Juruti, located on the Amazon riverbank, in western Pará - opened on September 15th - has bauxite reserves estimated in 280 millions of tons. The initial production of the mine is calculated in 2,6 millions of tons/year. Operating with such significant quantity of ore requires a specialized engineering to the conveying systems, processing and loading. Therefore, Alcoa invested in Metso's equipment such as car dumpers, apron feeders, stackers, reclaimer, belt conveyor systems, ship loader and vibrating screens. The bucket wheel reclaimer supplied to Alcoa is one of the equipment with higher technological advance, ensuring the efficiency on the shipment of the bauxite. This equipment has logic of automated operation, allowing steps forward movements and boom slewing to reclaim bauxite from the stock pile in various benches, and further achieve the rated capacity of the project. Another important equipment is the ship loader with the traveling movement along the quay and by means of boom slewing and extension which allows reaching all the holds of vessels and making its loading efficiently and in a timely manner. This avoids the increased stay of ships and, consequently, additional payments of demurrage by Alcoa, explains Carlos Ivan Equi, Metso's Vice President for Proposal and Sales Support. According to the preliminary result of the share exchange offer, the shares tendered in the share exchange offer represent approximately 96.50 percent of all the shares and votes in Tamfelt on a fully diluted basis (including shares already owned by Metso or its affiliates). All of the stock options were tendered in the share exchange offer.
