Job creation seems to be government’s broad-based, sensible and sustainable solution to the nationalisation issue. Since the beginning of the year the South African government has placed particular emphasis on skills development and job creation. Mining, and its related industries, have been identified as particular growth areas.
During the opening of parliament, president Jacob Zuma said, “We have introduced a New Growth Path that will guide our work in achieving these goals, working within the premise that the creation of decent work is at the centre of our economic policies. We urge every sector and every business entity, regardless of size, to focus on job creation. Every contribution counts in this national effort.”
A new plan being considered by the Gillard government could help fill the gaps in the skilled workers shortage. As the mining boom continues, the need for labour has increased and the federal government is examining a plan to allow an extra 20 000 skilled migrants into Australia.
Treasurer Wayne Swan is under pressure from Treasury bureaucrats to increase the skilled migrant intake, particularly for Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland.
“Closing the gap” in the “disadvantage” Aboriginal people experience in employment and education in western NSW is the focus of a new Aboriginal Education and Training Unit, a TAFE Institute director said. The new team of 15 Aboriginal staff located in Dubbo, Bathurst, Orange, Broken Hill and in the north west of the state, has been formed in response to feedback from Aboriginal communities that TAFE could be doing more to meet the needs of Aboriginal people and communities.

According to a recent study, more labor accidents could be prevented if workers received additional interactive, engaging training. The researchers found that when it comes to acquiring safety knowledge and demonstrating safe work behaviors in hazardous work environments, interactive training techniques like hands-on simulations play a critical role.
PERTH - Recruitment and labour hire specialists Humanis Group will acquire a 49% interest in Springsure Mining, which will build a training mine near Newcastle in New South Wales to provide practical and theoretical training. Humanis said on Tuesday that the agreement would provide the group with a compelling selling proposition to supply mine site trained personnel to the industry.
The training mine would seek to tackle the recent and expected future shortage of skilled labour by means of a practical real-life mining operation, MD George Gelavis said.
PANAJI: The state's lone government-run engineering institute, Goa College of Engineering (GEC) at Farmagudi, is planning to set up a new department of mining from the academic year 2011-12.
Sources said that the GEC has forwarded a proposal to begin a graduate course in mining engineering from the new academic year to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) through the state directorate of technical education. The institute plans to set up an independent department to run the course.
