ABOUT Hermosa
Hermosa, located approximately 75 miles south-east of Tucson, Arizona, is the only advanced mining project in the United States as of 2023 that could produce two federally designated critical minerals—manganese and zinc—as well as silver and lead. The project has the potential to help power the nation’s clean energy future, strengthen the domestic supply chain of critical minerals, grow the local economy, and improve lives in Santa Cruz County and the surrounding community for generations to come.

ABOUT THE ROLE
South32 is seeking an Intern to join the External Affairs team to support South32’s Washington, D.C. team in its efforts to engage with U.S. federal government stakeholders on policies and legislation impacting the mining and resources sectors. This role will gain exposure to the intersection of the mining industry and U.S. federal government, contributing to South32’s government relations initiatives.
Other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
- Attending and reporting on key congressional hearings, briefings, and meetings related to the mining and natural resources sectors.
- Assisting in mapping key stakeholders in the U.S. government, including members of Congress, agencies (e.g., the EPA, DOI, etc.), and other key policymakers.
- Assisting in the development of briefings for leadership regarding policy developments and government interactions.
- Assisting in tracking of upcoming legislation with industry relevance.
- Attending relevant external events and meetings, taking notes, and providing insights into discussions related to the mining sector and federal government actions.
About You
- Actively enrolled and in the second year or higher of university. Pursuing political science, public policy, or adjacent degree.
- A demonstrated interest in U.S. government affairs, particularly regarding the mining, energy, or natural resources sectors.
- Exceptional organizational and communication skills.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite programs required.
- Understanding of congressional procedure.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while also taking initiative and working independently when required.
