Job Purpose
The Mechanical Fitter is responsible for the installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of fixed plant mechanical equipment to ensure maximum equipment reliability and operational efficiency. The role supports production by minimizing equipment downtime and ensuring all tasks are performed in line with company safety and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out preventative, corrective, and predictive maintenance on pumps, gearboxes, screens, crushers, mills, conveyors, and piping systems.
- Install, align, and dismantle mechanical components, including bearings, couplings, and rotating equipment.
- Conduct inspections to identify wear, damage, misalignment, or potential mechanical failures.
- Use hand and power tools, lifting gear, and precision instruments (e.g., dial indicators, micrometers) to perform fitting tasks.
- Collaborate with supervisors and planners to execute planned maintenance schedules and respond to breakdowns efficiently.
- Interpret mechanical drawings and equipment manuals for installation and repairs.
- Ensure all maintenance tasks are executed safely, complying with all HSE regulations and company procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of work completed, time taken, and parts used through the maintenance management system (e.g., Pronto or SAP).
- Report any equipment faults, hazards, or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Support plant shutdowns, rebuilds, and commissioning activities as required.
Qualifications
- Full Grade 12 School Certificate
- Craft Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Mechanical Fitting (accredited institution)
- Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) is an advantage
- Valid certification in rigging, working at heights, or confined space (desirable)
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years experience in mechanical fitting in a mining or heavy industrial plant environment
- Hands-on experience with pumps, conveyors, gearboxes, agitators, and large rotating equipment
- Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic systems is an added advantage
- Experience working with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
Skills and Competencies
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and troubleshooting ability
- Ability to read technical drawings and mechanical schematics
- Good understanding of safe work procedures and risk assessments
- Physically fit and able to work in harsh plant environments
- Team player with strong communication skills
- Basic computer literacy for reporting and job logging
