Job description:
PURPOSE
To support mineralogical and geometallurgical investigations by preparing samples, conducting tests, and generating data that informs process optimization, ore characterization, and metallurgical performance. The role is critical in linking ore properties to plant behavior and recovery outcomes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function.
Sample Collection & Preparation
The individual should be organised, with good house keeping and record keeping.
They should pay attention to detail & follow procedures precisely – this includes avoiding contamination and ensuring resin mixing ratios are accurate.
Some manual work is expected (lifting heavy samples, hammering rocks to the right size for breakage tests).
Mineralogy has complex, sensitive expensive automated equipment (grinding & polishing machine; carbon coater), and the users need to take good care with the instruments to avoid damaging them.
Mineralogical Analysis
Once trained to do so, analysts are expected to be able to set up routine analyses on the TIMA (scanning electron microscope). This is a highly specialized instrument. Analysts need to precisely mount blocks (polished sections) in the TIMA holder, carefully load them in the microscope, accurately add the sample measurement details linked to the appropriate blocks in the holder, and maintain a large number of required measurement parameters to set up an auto-analysis.
This allows us to maximise our TIMA utilisation, and keep it running close to 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Geometallurgical Testing
Conduct bench-scale tests (e.g., flotation, Hardness Index Testing) to assess ore variability.
Record and report metallurgical responses linked to ore types and mineralogy.
Data Management & Reporting
Enter and validate mineralogical and metallurgical data in databases or LIMS.
Assist in preparing technical reports, charts, and presentations for internal use.
Maintain traceability and QA/QC of all samples and test results.
Safety & Housekeeping
Follow all safety protocols related to sample handling, chemical use, and equipment operation.
Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Participate in safety meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
