Job Description
DeBeers Group, Science and Technology is a multidisciplinary group that undertakes the research, development, and manufacture of complex sorting machines and verification instruments, with a focus on supporting the Diamond industry.
The purpose of the Toolroom and Assembly Technician role is to help balance the flow of work through the Toolroom and Assembly/Test areas, the goal being to remove any peaks and troughs created through uneven customer demand and product type.
The Toolroom and Assembly Technician needs to be fully proficient in both general machining and electro/mechanical assembly and will also be expected to manage their own workload and priorities to ensure the best result is achieved for the customer.
Key Work Outputs And Accountabilities
Toolroom
- Work from formal documentation to produce or modify components used for: Development, Production and Spares
- Operate mills, lathes, drills and grinders etc. ensuring the safety of yourself and others.
- 3D print and process production and prototype items
- Conduct identified machine maintenance activities and prior to use, record ensure pre-use equipment checks are performed and recorded
Assembly and Test
- Work from formal documentation to mechanically and electrically produce sub-assemblies and instruments in accordance with production plans and specifications.
- Work with the Production Controller to ensure that shortages are flagged and remedied.
- Test sub level and finished machines and systems in accordance with design documentation.
General
- Feedback documentation, assembly and functional problems to engineering teams
- Initiate change control procedure where appropriate
- Support root cause analysis and corrective action activities
Health and Safety
- Ensure own working environment and practices comply with all legal and DeBeers policy guidelines in relation to Health, Safety and Environmental issues.
- Take joint responsibility with other Toolroom technicians for carrying out the Toolroom Maintenance schedule.
Qualifications
- Good general education
- Technical Certificate or NVQ qualification in workshop practice
- Recognised apprenticeship or attendance on a practical training scheme
Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a low volume precision machining environment
- Minimum 5 years’ experience of precision mechanical assembly
- Experience of electrical assembly and testing (would be beneficial)
Skills / Knowledge
- Ability to read drawings and electrical circuit diagrams
- Computer literate in the use of MRP, Microsoft Office, and general document management systems
- Skilled in the use of general machine shop equipment (manual lathes, milling machines, drills, tapping machines etc.)
- Ability to perform / support root cause analysis activities
