About the Programme
Our 30‑month Graduate Programme is designed to develop the next generation of technical shipping professionals, with a strong foundation in safety leadership, technical operations and risk management.
The programme focuses primarily on the Safety & Technical function, complemented by structured cross‑functional rotations that provide broader exposure to commercial, operational, trading and business development activities. This approach ensures graduates develop a holistic understanding of Anglo American’s shipping business while building deep technical expertise.
The programme prepares graduates for long‑term careers within Anglo American Shipping, with the opportunity to be considered for a permanent role during or at the end of the programme.
This role is designed to develop technically capable professionals who demonstrate Anglo American’s values of Safety, Care & Respect, Integrity, Collaboration, Accountability and Innovation., with the opportunity to be considered for a permanent role at the end of the program., or earlier if a permanent role becomes available within the Shipping team.
The program also endeavors to prepare the next generation of leaders in shipping, preparing them for managerial and senior leadership positions.
Rotation
Safety & Technical Rotation (Primary Focus)
The graduate must be analytical, organized, responsible and have good interpersonal skills. This position is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic and ambitious individual seeking to experience the real world of Dry Bulk Global Shipping and learn about the intricate details of the business.
The incumbent will spend the majority of the program within the Safety & Technical function, developing technical competence, safety leadership mindset and operational risk awareness.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop a strong understanding of operational and physical risks associated with Anglo American’s chartered fleet and shipping operations
- Support the identification, mitigation and management of technical and operational risks
- Gain knowledge and practical exposure to Anglo American’s vetting framework and vessel selection standards
- Develop understanding of dry bulk vessel technical operations, ship management and maintenance fundamentals
- Participate in vessel inspections and support Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) engagements where applicable
- Demonstrate and promote Anglo American’s Safety values and contribute to strengthening safety culture across operations
- Support incident investigations, root cause analysis and preparation of learning shares
- Develop understanding of the chartering safety framework, including accountabilities between shipowner, ship manager and charterer
- Gain exposure to global Safety & Technical desks, including rotation opportunities across key locations (subject to business requirements)
- Develop understanding of shipowner budgeting, cost control and technical financial management
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and safety performance reviews
This rotation will develop strong technical judgement, risk awareness and safety leadership capabilities aligned with Anglo American’s commitment to making injuries impossible.
Cross-Functional Rotations (Supporting Exposure)
To complement the Safety & Technical focus, the graduate will undertake shorter rotations across key shipping functions to develop an end to end understanding of the shipping value chain.
These rotations will provide exposure to:
Commercial:
- Chartering structures including time charter and voyage charter
- Vessel selection and trade suitability considerations
- Market fundamentals and voyage economics
Operations:
- Voyage execution and stakeholder coordination
- Laytime, claims and operational cost management
- Vessel performance monitoring and voyage optimisation
- Bunker market fundamentals and procurement exposure
Business Development:
- Participation in strategic projects and improvement initiatives
- Market analysis and reporting support
- Exposure to decarbonisation and carbon accounting initiatives
- Governance and leadership reporting support
Financial Trading:
- Exposure to freight and bunker hedging concepts
- Market data analysis and reporting
- Understanding financial risk management within shipping
Graduate Development
Opportunities to be involved in leadership training and Networking opportunities with graduates from other area of the Group
- Project work potentially outside of Shipping
- Presenting at least two business challenges and improvement opportunities with detail strategic execution plan.
Program Outcomes
By the end of the program, the Graduate – Technical Shipping is expected to:
- Develop strong Safety & Technical capability
- Build understanding of Anglo American’s shipping risk profile
- Gain exposure to commercial and operational decision-making
- Demonstrate Anglo American values and safety leadership behaviours
- Develop into a future technical professional within Anglo American Shipping
Requirements
- Preferably a Class 3 Certificate of Competency (Deck) or MEO Class IV (4) Certificate of Competency (Engine) or Marine Electro-Technical Officer (METO)
- Preferred sailed at least one contract as a 3rd officer or 3rd or 04th Engineer (with independent watchkeeping experience)
- Preferred holding a graduation degree in Nautical/Bachelor is science or Mechanical Engineering.
