About The Role
We are looking for a Senior Corporate Counsel to support the Head of Corporate Legal in the provision of legal services and strategic advice to the Rio Tinto Group.
This is a great opportunity for a Senior Corporate Counsel to join a leading global company. Candidates outside of the PQE bracket with the right experience will also be considered for this position.
This role is part of the Rio Tinto Legal team, reporting to the Head of Corporate Legal, you will be
- Providing corporate legal and structuring advice in the context of M&A, investments, divestments and other strategic projects for the Rio Tinto Group
- Providing legal advice on Rio Tinto’s dual listed companies (DLC) structure
- Providing legal advice on corporate disclosures, corporate governance, listing rules and other public company regulatory matters
- Working with other members of the Corporate Legal team to deliver equity and debt transactions (as required)
- Providing timely, accurate, independent and commercially focussed legal advice
- Cost effective management of external legal resources
- Maintaining awareness of external and internal legal developments, which are likely to lead to a need for legal advice
- Drafting and negotiation of transaction terms and legal documents
- Reviewing and developing templates and guidance within the Corporate Legal area of expertise
About You
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
- Admission to practice as a solicitor in England and Wales
- At least 6-8 years post-qualification experience including strong corporate experience at a leading law firm
- In-house experience would be an advantage but is not a pre-requisite
- Commercial awareness and a practical common-sense approach
- Strong communication and inter-personal skills and a demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate effectively with a wide range of counterparties and stakeholders
- Initiative and a proven ability to develop and lead the legal support to the business
- Experience in mining or natural resources would be an advantage but is not a pre-requisite
- Willingness to travel internationally on an ad hoc basis

Where you’ll be working
Our global headquarters is situated in St. James’s Square, in the City of Westminster, London, on the edge of the West End, and is the site of the group’s original head office. Located over several floors, the office is truly a global hub for the business and is the base for many members of the Executive Committee. As such, the grade II listed office reflects the vibrancy of the location, although it also overlooks the tranquillity of the only garden square in the district and is a short walk from Green Park and Piccadilly underground stations.
