Position Purpose
To support the implementation of Barrick Exploration’s Health & Safety Management System through compliance with H&S policies, standards, procedures, and regulations. The role aims to reduce the likelihood of reportable incidents during critical activities such as mobile equipment operations, drilling programs, geophysical and seismic surveys, earthworks, and field exploration activities, ensuring a “Safe Discovery” approach—delivering exploration results while minimizing the risk of incidents throughout exploration processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the implementation of the Barrick Exploration Health & Safety Management System (BSHS).
- Provide field-based H&S supervision and advise on safety management in remote exploration environments, including drilling, geophysics, mapping, sampling, rock and sediment sampling, reconnaissance activities, and camp establishment.
- Implement the company’s risk management methodology to control potential unwanted events and reduce the likelihood of reportable incidents.
- Promote and participate in daily safety inspections of work areas, drill pads, exploration camps, and site access routes.
- Implement H&S training programs, fatality risk management initiatives, and life-saving controls.
- Lead and participate in incident investigation committees.
- Advise on compliance with Jamaican H&S legislation and corporate requirements.
- Manage key H&S performance indicators, promoting both leading and lagging indicators (Forwood/PBI) to ensure KPI achievement.
- Monitor contractor H&S performance, ensuring compliance with Barrick standards and applicable legal requirements.
- Lead the review, update, and implementation of emergency response plans, drills, and response protocols.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Occupational Health & Safety, including at least 3 years in mineral exploration operations.
- Experience working on Greenfield exploration projects in tropical environments and rotational camp-based operations in Central America.
- Proven experience with drilling operations (Diamond Drilling – DDH and Reverse Circulation – RC) and geophysical exploration programs.
- Strong knowledge of mining health and safety regulations and standards, including ISO 45001 and applicable local H&S legislation.
- Valid driver's license.
- Availability to travel internationally and work on rotational schedules at different locations in Jamaica
- English – Intermediate to Advanced proficiency.
