Role Purpose
The HSE Superintendent plays a pivotal role in strengthening and expanding health, safety, and environmental governance across critical operational areas including infrastructure, logistics, mining, maintenance and processing. This position ensures the consistent application of Rio Tinto’s HSE standards, mitigates operational risks, and fosters a proactive safety culture aligned with the company’s values and strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of HSE policies, procedures, and systems across operational domains.
- Provide expert guidance and support to operational teams to ensure compliance with Rio Tinto’s HSE standards and local regulations.
- Conduct risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies to address emerging safety and environmental challenges.
- Drive a proactive safety culture through coaching, awareness campaigns, and leadership engagement.
- Monitor and report HSE performance metrics, identifying trends and recommending corrective actions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support ramp-up activities and integration of new projects.
- Ensure readiness for audits and inspections and lead incident investigations.
- Mentor and develop HSE personnel to build team capability and resilience.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in HSE roles within mining, infrastructure, or heavy industry.
- Proven leadership in implementing HSE systems in complex operational environments.
- Strong understanding of international HSE standards and regulatory frameworks.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working in multicultural and remote settings is highly desirable.

About The Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.
Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
