Role Purpose
This role is critical to strengthening HSE governance and coverage during the ramp-up phase of mining operations. The Advisor will ensure the consistent application of Rio Tinto’s HSE standards and procedures, particularly in collaboration with Chinese mining contractors. The ability to communicate fluently in Chinese is essential to bridge language gaps and enhance safety compliance and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide HSE oversight and support across mining operations, focusing on load and haul and blasting activities.
- Act as a liaison between Rio Tinto HSE teams and Chinese contractors to ensure clear communication and understanding of safety protocols.
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure compliance with Rio Tinto’s HSE standards.
- Support incident investigations and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Promote a strong safety culture and lead by example in all interactions.
- Assist in fatigue management and ensure team members operate within safe working hours.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address emerging risks and operational challenges.
Qualifications & Experience
- Proven experience in HSE advisory roles within mining or heavy industry.
- Fluency in Mandarin Chinese and English (spoken and written) is mandatory.
- Strong understanding of international HSE standards and practices.
- Experience working with multicultural teams, preferably in West Africa or similar environments.
- Ability to work in remote and challenging conditions on a FIFO roster.

About The Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.
Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
