About The Role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented
Advisor – Governance & Compliance to join our
Sustainability and Social Performance team. This is an ideal role for a recent graduate who is eager to apply academic knowledge in a practical setting, gain hands-on experience, and contribute to NPL’s governance, compliance, and social accountability functions.
You will assist with monitoring and reporting on NPL’s social and governance commitments, helping ensure alignment with Barrick’s international sustainability standards and frameworks such as ICMM, IFC Performance Standards, ISO, RGMP+, and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
Key Responsibilities
Support the tracking and reporting of NPL’s community, legal, and sustainability obligations.
Assist in maintaining accurate, auditable registers for governance and compliance records.
Help coordinate internal compliance checks and support external assurance activities.
Contribute to the preparation of reports, summaries, and presentations for management and external stakeholders.
Assist in developing training materials and governance awareness tools for community committees.
Participate in field engagements and awareness programs with local communities.
Maintain a high level of health, safety, and environmental awareness in all activities.
About You
You are a recent graduate who is curious, ethical, and driven to contribute to sustainable development in Papua New Guinea. You bring enthusiasm, critical thinking, and a willingness to learn in a fast-paced, multicultural environment.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in law, Governance, Political Science, Environmental Studies, Social Science, or a related field.
- Some experience (e.g. through internship, volunteering, or project work) in governance, compliance, or sustainability is advantageous.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical ability, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
- Knowledge of local languages such as Ipili or Engan is an advantage.
- Commitment to ethical conduct, cultural sensitivity, and community engagement.
Important Note – This Is Not a Legal Practitioner Role
While legal training or background is highly valued, this position is not a practicing legal role. NPL will not maintain or fund a Papua New Guinea Law Society practicing certificate for this position.
