About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose
The Engineer – Instrument and Control is responsible for delivering technical expertise and specialist support to the Maintenance and Operations teams, ensuring the effective maintenance and continuous development of process control and information systems to uphold high standards of system availability and integrity.
Essential Duties
Safety
- Ensures personnel and team compliance with all company HSE requirements & policies including Fitness for Work.
- Complete any HSE tasks only if the hazards and any potential consequences are understood and any corrections are first agreed by the relevant Supervisor.
People
- Works constructively within a diverse group of people.
- Delivers consistently on commitments and takes accountability for own development.
Production
- Implement requested changes to plant control systems according to department change management procedure.
- Ensure that plant control system programming standards are maintained, and documentation kept up to date and in an auditable format.
- Provide appropriate communication and training programs to support those personnel involved in or affected by the introduction of new processes or changes to existing processes or control systems.
- Manage the plant hardware system components of the plant control system, ensuring high availability and acceptable processor times and system loading.
- Assist with maintaining the availability of the plant data historian.
- Provide support and ensure the integrity of data collected by the plant accounting system is maintained.
- Provide support to and ensure the integrity of plant on-line stream analyzers.
- Liaise closely with the electrical and instrumentation groups to ensure that process control hardware systems are maintained and do not compromise system integrity.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement process by identifying and developing solutions to electrical & control system reliability and functional issues.
Cost
- Actively seeks cost reduction opportunities and identifies & reports any cost wastage within designated area.
Training & Experience
- Tertiary bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (Process Control) or similar essentials.
- IEPNG Engineer Membership essential.
- PNG Driver's License - Class 6 essential.
- Previous experience in delivery and assessment of training desirable.
- Works in accordance with PNG Mine Safety Act, Newcrest Safety System, Safety Policies and Procedures and Newcrest Environment policies and all departmental operating procedures.
- Experience in at least two of the following systems:
- Modicon Quantum or Momentum PLC’s and Concept software
- Schneider Electric X80 PLC
- Wonderware SCADA
- Magelis HMI
- Allen Bradley PLC’s & HMIs
- Experience in a programming or scripting language is desirable – e.g. C++, VBScript, VBA, etc.
