Kumba Iron Ore
We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Centurion, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.
Job Description
As a
Section Manager Safety (Engineering) your responsibilities will include:
- Ensure all safety inspections conform to the standards and requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Mine Health and Safety Function as appropriate to ensure optimal safety performance management.
- Ensure that all statistical data required by DMRE (Dept of Mineral and Energy) is submitted according to legislation.
- SHE Inspections:
- Establish a comprehensive inventory of facilities, equipment, and infrastructure that must be inspected regularly in the Principal Exploration’s areas of responsibility.
- Establish and keep up to date a comprehensive schedule of inspections that covers all facilities, equipment, and infrastructure that must be inspected regularly in the areas of responsibility.
- Ensure that SHE Officers conduct thorough, legally compliant physical condition inspections as per approved schedules, using fit-for-purpose checklists.
- Ensure SHE officer inspections and associated records comply with applicable legal requirements.
- Communicate SHE Officers’ findings to and ensure sign-off by the relevant legal appointees.
- Inspect and sign off on associated documentation.
- Ensure the SHE Officer's findings are recorded and signed off in the appropriate logbooks.
- Ensure that relevant information is captured on company systems such as ISOMETRIX.
- Verify the effective close-out of findings.
- Investigations:
- Conduct, facilitate, participate in and coordinate incident investigations in line with legal and Anglo American requirements.
- Ensure that all incident investigation reports are comprehensive and are signed off by the necessary managers and legal appointees.
- Ensure that all incidents are reported to management and relevant authorities within the timeframes specified in the law and Kumba, Anglo American or site SHE management procedures.
- Ensure that incidents and related actions are captured on the relevant systems, such as ISOMETRIX.
- Follow up on the close-out of corrective actions.
- Ensure that all required SHE Files are in place and contain reliable information.
- Review all reported High Potential Hazards before they are loaded onto ISOMETRIX.
- Promoting a Safety Culture:
- Consistently apply Safety principles in all team interactions and take personal responsibility for the safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities.
- Function as a role model and reinforce a workplace culture where safety for the site is paramount.
- Provide an environment for on-site teams to challenge and act on unsafe behaviours without fear of repercussions.
- Drive the SHE management system and risk management process continuously on the project.
- Support necessary actions to implement Safety Improvement Plans (SIPs) effectively.
- Actively participate in SHE initiatives (e.g., VFLs, Hazard hunts and HPH reporting).
- Conduct and or participate in Internal and external audits as necessary.
- Schedule, plan, and coordinate the Emergency drills and ensure that all areas of responsibility are comprehensively covered.
- Provide ongoing coaching for SHE Officers and contractor employees.
- Ensure that the High-Risk Work management and Critical Controls Management processes are effectively implemented.
- Assist and guide contractors during the tender and on-mine onboarding phases.
- Ensure that learnings and other relevant SHE communications from Kumba/ Anglo American are effectively communicated to all contractor employees.
- Reporting:
- Analyse SHE statistics and provide guidance based on identified trends.
- Compile and submit comprehensive daily (when required), weekly, monthly, and quarterly SHE reports using prescribed templates or formats.
- Ensure accurate and timely compilation and submission of applicable reports to regulatory authorities such as the DMR.
- Compliance:
- Manage compliance of the team within the work area with external (legislative, regulatory, permitting) and local requirements
This role is in the Safety, Health, Environment, Protection & Security (SHEPS) at Band 6 (D4/D5) and reports to the Manager SHEPS
Qualifications
- Grade 12
- B-degree in Safety Management /Risk Management or equivalent NQF7
- SA Drivers Licence
- Certificate of training in OHSAS 18001/45001 System Auditing and or integrated internal auditing will be advantageous
Technical Knowledge
- Extensive knowledge of safety management practices, with 6-8 years of experience.
- In-depth understanding of mining, process, and engineering principles, including developing, implementing, managing, and auditing safety and risk control initiatives in a mining environment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (Act 29 of 1996) and other related legislation.
- Advanced understanding of project management principles and methodologies.
- Advanced knowledge of investigation techniques and report writing.
- Familiarity with managing contractor safety within the mining sector.
- Expertise in managing safety risks and integrated risk management practices.
