About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose
To carry out the daily operations of the Permit to Work (PTW) System through permit writing, issuing, and isolations to ensure production and safety guidelines are met and adhered to on a daily basis.
Essential Duties
- Ensure compliance with all company HSE requirements and policies, including Fitness for Work.
- Complete HSE tasks only after hazards and potential consequences are understood and corrections agreed by the Supervisor.
- Work constructively within a diverse team and take accountability for personal development.
- Ensure hazards to life and equipment are isolated and controlled before issuing permits.
- Carry out work as directed, adhering to safe working procedures, maintenance schedules, and shutdown plans.
- Review JSEA, scopes of work, and conduct risk analysis to apply appropriate safety controls.
- Liaise with Maintenance, Operations, and business partners to ensure equipment readiness without compromising safety or production.
- Conduct real-time hazard assessments and perform isolations to ensure safety.
- Communicate PTW and isolation issues promptly to the PTW Supervisor and provide daily feedback.
- Understand equipment operation within Power & Technology structure for accurate isolations and hazard control.
- Complete shift tasks (inspections, defect identification, SOPs) within safety and compliance guidelines.
- Participate in training, toolbox meetings, inductions, and other activities as required.
- Seek cost reduction opportunities and report cost wastage.
Training & Experience
Qualifications:
- Relevant Trade Certificate (essential).
- PNG Driver's Licence – Class 6 (essential).
- Mechanical and Trade Certificates (essential).
- Previous experience in training delivery and assessment (desirable).
Required Knowledge & Experience:
- 3–5 years relevant work experience, including PTW issuer/writer experience with lockout/tagout systems.
- Experience in heavy industry, preferably mining, power generation, boiler, or oil & gas.
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Office, SAP desirable).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work autonomously, self-motivated, and positive.
- High attention to detail, good organization, and time management.
- Strong active listening and interpersonal skills.
Technical Capabilities:
- Knowledge of PNG Mine Safety Act, Newcrest Safety System, and environmental policies.
- Completion of PTW training requirements for permit issuance.
- Safety skills for personnel protection, environmental care, and plant integrity.
