Reporting to the Sr. Vice-President, SHES, this role leads and continuously enhances the safety and health elements of the Nutrien Way (our integrated management system), ensuring the implementation of strategic programs that identify, assess, and mitigate safety and health risks - both physical and psychological - across our operations. The Senior Director enables compliance with an evolving regulatory environment, provides subject matter expertise on key risks and controls, and supports assurance and due diligence activities.
Collaboration with SHES business partnership teams is essential to design and deliver company-wide programs, including those that strengthen leadership capabilities, enhance contractor safety and health performance, and ensure the effectiveness of our control environment in partnership with functional and operational teams. The Senior Director oversees the building of safety and health capacity across our diverse network of operational activity, engaging as needed with external stakeholders, such as regulators, industry bodies, and research agencies, to advance Nutrien’s safety and health objectives.
What You'll Do
- Establish, govern, and continuously enhance the safety and health components of the Nutrien Way (our integrated management system) to support effective mitigation of material risks.
- Support the identification, assessment, and mitigation of material safety and health risks across all operations, including both physical and psychological hazards.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve strategic safety and health programs and initiatives, contributing to leadership capability development and fostering a continually evolving positive safety culture.
- Support regulatory compliance by monitoring, reporting, and responding to regulatory changes affecting safety and health.
- Provide expertise on material safety and health risks and controls to operating segments as requested through SHES business partners.
- Contribute expertise to assurance activities focused on managing safety and health risks and opportunities, including support of business development due diligence when needed.
- Coordinate the safety and health components of the contractor management framework, partnering with the Procurement Function and SHES business partnership teams.
- Oversee compliance with transportation safety regulatory requirements across rail, road, and marine networks relevant to the movement of company products.
- Engage external stakeholders - regulators, industry bodies, and research agencies - to advance safety and health objectives.
What You'll Bring
- At least 15 years of relevant experience, including a minimum of 5 years managing safety and health functions within complex organizations.
- Senior leadership experience with demonstrable success in driving change and innovation, producing superior results in one or more businesses.
- Progressive leadership roles in safety and health within the agricultural, mining, chemical processing, or transportation industries.
- Proven skills in risk assessment, incident investigation, and assurance activities, supporting the role’s focus on mitigating material risks.
- Proven experience leading large-scale SHES initiatives across multiple sites and international geographies.
- Extensive knowledge of safety and health regulations, standards and codes of practice, preferably across multiple international jurisdictions.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence at all organizational levels.
- Experience leading large-scale safety and health initiatives in heavy industrial environments, especially in mining, manufacturing, or chemical operations.
- Experience in industry advocacy and collaborative problem-solving.
- Extensive experience in strategic oversight and governance in complex organizational environments.
- Demonstrated leadership in establishing and maintaining workplace safety culture, policy compliance, and process excellence, while fostering innovation and continuous improvement.
- Ability to align operational practices with Nutrien’s values to achieve scalable and sustainable outcomes across global teams.
