Anglo American is a leading global mining company with operations across LATAM, Southern Africa, Europe and North America. Within Anglo American, Group Technical drives the future of mining — setting global standards, advancing innovation and enabling safe, reliable and sustainable operations worldwide.
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced
Principal Mechanical Engineer – Design & Analysis to act as a senior Subject Matter Expert across our global portfolio. This is a highly specialised engineering role focused on advanced design, simulation, modelling and first‑principles analysis of complex mechanical systems.
While deep experience in Bulk Materials Handling equipment (crushers, mills, screens, conveyors, thickeners, rotating machinery, etc.) is extremely valuable, we also welcome candidates from other high‑integrity, analysis‑heavy engineering sectors such as aerospace, petrochemical, automotive, defence, marine or other heavy industrial environments where mechanical/structural integrity, advanced simulation and theoretical engineering are core.
This is not an operational maintenance role — it is a deep technical, high‑rigour design & analysis position requiring mastery of FEA, DEM, dynamic simulations, digital engineering and root cause analysis.
Who You Are
You are a highly analytical, deeply technical mechanical engineer who thrives on solving complex challenges using simulation, modelling and theoretical analysis. Whether your background is in mining, aerospace, automotive, petrochemicals, defence or another high‑rigour engineering field, you bring strong engineering fundamentals, a systems mindset and the ability to influence engineering decisions across a global organisation.
Key role functions:
- Provide SME‑level guidance, support and oversight on the design, performance, safety and integrity of mechanical systems (of bulk materials handling equipment, Heavy Earth Moving Equipment, etc.) across global operations.
- Lead advanced FEA, DEM, structural modelling and dynamic simulation work to diagnose issues, validate designs and enhance equipment reliability.
- Conduct detailed first‑principles failure investigations, using theoretical modelling and structured analysis to determine root causes and develop engineered solutions.
- Define, maintain and enhance Mechanical Engineering standards, technical specifications and best‑practice principles across the Group.
- Support project, engineering, maintenance and operational teams on conceptual design, Hazops, risk assessments and technical reviews.
- Champion the use of simulation, modelling and digital engineering across the organisation.
- Conduct integrity and safety assessments of pressure systems, lifting equipment and heavy mechanical assets.
- Ensure compliance with international engineering standards, legislation and industry best practice in all mechanical design and analysis work.
Qualifications
What We’re Looking For
Essential
- Bachelor’s/Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
- Professional Engineer registration (ECSA, CREA, CIP, IEng, CIC or equivalent).
- Expertise in advanced mechanical design & analysis with experience in one or more of the following domains:
- Bulk Materials Handling (crushers, mills, screens, conveyors, rotating equipment)
- Aerospace or defence engineering
- Automotive powertrain or structural engineering
- Petrochemical or pressure‑equipment design
- Marine or heavy industrial mechanical systems
- Demonstrated mastery of:
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
- Discrete Element Modelling (DEM)
- Dynamic simulations and advanced mechanical modelling
- Theoretical / first‑principles engineering
- Failure analysis, fatigue, structural integrity and risk management
- Proven ability to convert analysis outputs into clear, practical engineering recommendations.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and ability to influence across technical and operational teams.
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification (Masters/PhD) in Mechanical Engineering.
- Exposure to mining, heavy industrial operations or large‑scale mechanical systems.
