Anglo American Steelmaking Coal
Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced
Truck & Shovel Mining Engineer to join our Capcoal Surface Operation - one of Anglo American’s most dynamic open‑cut steelmaking coal sites. Capcoal utilises draglines, shovels, excavators and a full ancillary fleet to move :5mtpa across three fast‑evolving coal seams.
In this role, you’ll report to the Technical Services Superintendent and take ownership of delivering best‑practice engineering support to our Truck & Shovel fleet, managing up to five truck fleets across a complex, high‑performing operation. Our Mining Engineers are key drivers of short–medium term (up to 18 months) mine planning and strategy - and with a recently approved mine expansion, there’s never been a more exciting time to join the team.
You’ll draw on your expertise in haulage optimisation, dump design and mine scheduling software to produce efficient, realistic and executable mine plans. Backed by a supportive planning team, you’ll work closely with production to communicate schedules clearly and ensure day‑to‑day operations run safely, smoothly and at peak efficiency.
Qualifications
We are seeking a tertiary qualified Mining Engineer with at least 3 years post graduate experience gained in an open cut environment.
To be successful in the role, desirable experience and attributes include:
- Truck & Shovel experience.
- Short to medium term design, planning and / or scheduling within an open cut operation.
- Experience in driving best practices through your department and into the business.
- Ability to understand functionality of business systems and extract relevant data for business purposes.
- Track record in driving continuous improvement.
- Strong commitment to health, safety and environmental standards.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Exposure to DESWIK highly desirable, SPRY, Vulcan, MINEX, SAP and/or mining/blasting software will be highly regarded.
