About The Role
We are actively searching for an Open Pit Dewatering Engineer located at the Côté Gold Mine Site reporting to the Superintendent, Geotechnical and Tailings. The Open Pit Dewatering Engineer is instrumental in designing, implementing, and optimizing water management systems to facilitate safe, efficient, and sustainable mining operations in an open-pit environment.
This role leverages expertise in hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering, and dewatering systems to mitigate water-related risks, enhance slope stability, and ensure regulatory compliance. The engineer collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, including mine operations, geotechnical specialists, hydrogeologists, and environmental experts, to integrate dewatering strategies into comprehensive mine plans and infrastructure development.
Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and manage integrated open pit dewatering strategies based on hydrogeological assessments, groundwater modeling, geotechnical data, and long-term mine planning.
- Engineer, install, and maintain dewatering infrastructure including high-capacity pumps, pipelines, sumps, drainage systems, and real-time monitoring instrumentation.
- Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and cost-benefit analyses to support dewatering projects while accounting for operational, geotechnical, and environmental constraints.
- Analyze pump performance, water balance models, and slope stability data to optimize system efficiency, manage water inflows, and reduce energy and environmental impacts.
- Monitor pit water levels and dewatering assets through regular inspections, diagnosing system issues and coordinating maintenance and repairs to ensure operational continuity.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret groundwater quantity and quality data to support decision-making, reporting, and regulatory compliance.
- Identify and mitigate dewatering-related risks, including slope instability and water ingress, while adhering to mine safety standards, ground control plans, and fatal risk controls.
- Collaborate with operations, geology, geotechnical, and project teams, as well as external contractors, to align dewatering solutions with mine design, production objectives, and construction activities.
Job Qualifications
Key Skills & Knowledge
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Hydrogeology, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field; a Master’s degree is advantageous.
- In-depth knowledge of hydrogeology, groundwater flow dynamics, rock mass classification, and mining drainage principles.
- Expertise in pump operations, troubleshooting, and maintenance, encompassing submersible, diesel, electric, and high-horsepower systems.
- Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings, water balance models, instrumentation diagrams, and geotechnical analyses.
- Competence with specialized software, including mine planning tools (e.g., Vulcan, MineSight), geotechnical software (e.g., Rocscience), water management applications, and modeling programs for slope stability and ventilation.
Relevant Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in mine water management, pumping systems, and groundwater monitoring, preferably in open-pit mining or heavy industrial settings.
- Prior involvement in open-pit operations, geotechnical design, or dewatering projects is highly valued; professional engineering (PE) licensure is preferred.
Skills & Strengths, We Value
- Superior analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with a focus on data-driven decision-making.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams and communicate complex technical information clearly.
- Strong organizational, reporting, and technical writing skills.
- Adaptability to work in physically demanding outdoor environments, including variable weather and exposure to mining hazards.
