OVERALL JOB PURPOSE:
The Senior Specialist, Instrument - Provide advanced technical expertise in instrumentation systems, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant equipment across the phosphate fertilizer complex.
The role supports preventive and corrective maintenance, reliability improvement, troubleshooting, and instrumentation project activities, while ensuring compliance with Maaden safety, quality, and environmental standards.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Maintenance & Reliability
- Lead preventive and predictive maintenance programs for instrumentation systems.
- Maintain and troubleshoot:
- Flow, pressure, temperature, and level transmitters
- Control valves and actuators
- Gas analyzers and process analyzers
- PLC / DCS instrumentation loops
- Conduct failure analysis and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to minimize plant downtime.
- Improve equipment reliability, MTBF, and asset integrity.
- Ensure compliance with Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) strategies.
Instrumentation Engineering Support
- Provide technical expertise for plant instrumentation systems.
- Review engineering drawings such as: P&IDs, Loop diagrams, Instrument index, Hook-up drawings
- Support design modifications and plant upgrades.
- Participate in instrument selection and specification for new equipment.
Troubleshooting & Technical Problem Solving
- Diagnose control loop issues and instrumentation failures.
- Resolve DCS/PLC control problems affecting production.
- Support operations during abnormal plant conditions.
- Provide recommendations for long-term solutions.
Project & Commissioning Support
Participate in:
- Pre-commissioning, Loop checking, Calibration, SAT/FAT testing
- Support startup and commissioning of new instrumentation systems.
- Ensure all new systems meet plant standards and specifications.
Calibration & Asset Integrity
- Manage calibration programs for all plant instruments.
- Ensure traceability to international calibration standards.
- Monitor instrument accuracy and performance.
Spare Parts & Materials Management
- Review and optimize critical instrumentation spare parts inventory.
- Evaluate obsolete equipment replacement options.
- Work with warehouse to verify spare compatibility and specifications.
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with: HSSE policies, Process Safety Management (PSM), Work permit systems, Risk assessments
Conduct:
- Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
- Task Risk Assessments
- Promote Maaden safety culture transformation programs.
Team Leadership & Technical Coaching
- Provide technical training and mentoring to technicians and engineers.
- Support workforce competency development.
- Participate in succession planning and Saudization initiatives.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain records of: Calibration reports, Maintenance history, Instrument performance data
- Prepare technical reports and reliability improvement recommendations.
- Update documentation in SAP / CMMS systems.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Typical KPIs for this role include:
Instrumentation equipment availability, Reduction in instrument failure rate, Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) improvement, Calibration compliance rate, Maintenance work order completion, Plant downtime reduction, HSSE compliance.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering or a related discipline. Certifications (Preferred) Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP), ISA certification, Safety or reliability certifications.
Minimum Experience:
5-12 years of experience in Fertilizer plant, Petrochemical plant, Mining / phosphate processing industry. Experience with instrumentation maintenance and reliability programs
