Position Description
The
Regional Drilling Operations Lead is the functional authority for drilling across the region, accountable for setting and governing safety and technical drilling standards. While site-based Drilling Superintendents report operationally within their sites, this role provides discipline leadership, ensuring alignment, consistency, and compliance with regional standards. The position plays a critical role in shaping safety culture, driving standardisation, and ensuring technical excellence across all drilling activities.

Responsibilities
Safety Culture:
- Define and own regional drilling safety standards and critical controls.
- Act as the custodian of drilling-related safety practices and procedures.
- Ensure full compliance with company safety policies, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.
- Lead incident investigations related to drilling activities and ensure effective corrective actions are implemented.
- Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and field inspections to identify and mitigate hazards.
- Intervene and provide direction where operations fall short of required safety standards.
- Partner with site leadership to embed a high-performance safety culture across drilling activities.
- Promote continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental (HSE) performance.
Technical Standards & Governance
- Develop, implement, and maintain regional drilling standards, procedures, and best practices.
- Ensure consistency and standardisation of drilling operations across all sites within the region.
- Monitor operational performance and ensure alignment with corporate objectives and KPIs.
- Provide governance and oversight to ensure adherence to approved drilling methodologies and processes.
Technical Accountability
- Serve as the regional technical authority for drilling operations.
- Establish and maintain technical drilling standards, including equipment selection, drilling methodologies, and performance benchmarks.
- Provide expert technical guidance, mentoring and support to site-based drilling teams.
- Review and approve drilling plans, designs, and execution strategies.
- Drive continuous improvement in drilling efficiency, productivity, and cost-effectiveness.
Functional Leadership & Governance
- Act as the regional discipline lead for drilling, providing functional leadership to site-based Drilling Superintendents.
- Establish clear expectations, standards, and ways of working across all drilling operations.
- Drive alignment across sites through regular engagement, forums, and performance reviews.
- Provide oversight and governance without direct line management, influencing outcomes through expertise and leadership.
- Ensure consistent application of safety and technical standards across all operations.
Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Track, analyse, and report on drilling performance metrics and KPIs.
- Identify opportunities for operational improvements and implement best practices across the region.
- Drive innovation and adoption of new drilling technologies and methodologies.
- Support cost control initiatives while maintaining safety and quality standards.Work in compliance with ISO 14001 and 45001 Standards.
Qualification Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Drilling Engineering, Geology, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
Experience And Skills Requirements
- Significant experience in drilling operations within the mining industry, including leadership at a regional or multi-site level.
- Strong technical expertise in drilling methods, equipment, and operational practices.
- Proven track record of driving safety performance and operational excellence.
- Experience managing contractors and cross-functional teams.
- Strong leadership and influencing skills.
- Deep understanding of health, safety, and environmental practices in mining.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to drive standardisation and continuous improvement across multiple sites.
