The Great Bear project is a development-stage asset located in the renowned and prolific Red Lake mining district, and represents one of the most exciting recent gold discoveries globally. The project has excellent potential to become a top-tier deposit that could support a large, long-life mine complex. Kinross’ comprehensive exploration and development program will aim to support the vision of a quality, high-grade, open-pit mine and a longer-term, sizeable underground mine.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Health, Safety, & Security Manager, the Health & Safety Superintendent provides leadership and oversight for the implementation and continuous improvement of health, safety and security programs at the Great Bear Project. The role will evolve as the project transitions from the current Advanced Exploration (AEX) phase into construction and operations.
This role promotes a proactive safety culture and ensures that company safety standards and regulatory requirements are integrated into daily work execution.
Kep Responsibilities and Duties
Critical Risk Management
- Support the implementation of the site’s Critical Risk Management (CRM) program.
- Ensure critical controls are clearly defined, communicated, and verified in the field.
- Facilitate risk assessments, hazard identification processes and job safety analyses.
- Maintain and monitor the site risk register and ensure mitigation measures are implemented.
Safety Programs & Systems
- Assist with the development and continuous improvement of safety standards, procedures, and work instructions.
- Support implementation of safety training programs and competency development initiatives.
- Coordinate safety program initiatives including critical control verification, inspections and field audits.
Contractor Safety Management
- Provide oversight of contractor safety management systems and performance.
- Ensure contractor work plans incorporate appropriate risk controls and safety requirements.
- Oversight of GBR’s contractor onboarding, training, and safety orientation processes.
- Monitor contractor safety performance and drive corrective actions where required.
Emergency Response & Preparedness
- Support development and implementation of the site Emergency Response Plan.
- Ensure emergency response resources and equipment are maintained and ready.
- Participate in emergency drills and support emergency preparedness across the site.
Incident Management & Investigations
- Lead or support investigations of incidents, near misses and high-potential events.
- Ensure root cause analysis methodologies are applied and corrective actions are implemented.
- Track and verify closure of corrective actions and ensure learnings are shared across the site.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation including:
- Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Ontario Mining Regulation (O. Reg. 854)
- Construction Projects Regulation (O. Reg. 213/91)
- Support regulatory inspections and audits.
- Liaise with regulatory agencies when required.
Safety Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Monitor leading and lagging safety performance indicators.
- Provide regular safety performance reports to leadership.
- Identify trends and opportunities for risk reduction.
- Lead or support safety improvement initiatives and learning activities.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate across multiple departments to integrate safety into work planning and execution.
- Liaise with the Joint Health and Safety Committee and support effective participation.
- Work closely with site team(s) to ensure alignment with site safety standards.
- Support a work environment that is aligned with Kinross’ Safeground principles.
- Other duties from time to time as assigned by the Health, Safety & Security Manager
Qualifications and Skill Requirements
A college diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Mining, or a related field with 10+ years of supervisory health and safety experience in construction and underground mining.
- Demonstrated experience supporting underground mining and/or major construction projects.
- Experience with critical risk management systems and incident investigations.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Mine rescue or emergency response training is considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of underground mining, surface mining, and/or construction hazards.
- Knowledge of Ontario mining, construction, and occupational health and safety legislation.

Work Conditions
This position is based in Red Lake, Ontario. Local candidates, or those willing to relocate with relocation assistance, will be given priority for this position. The local schedule is 7x7. However, a FIFO/DIDO arrangement may be considered with a schedule of 14x14.
Compensation and Total Rewards
The base salary range for the Health and Safety Superintendent is $150,000 to $170,000 + Short Term Incentive Bonus, + Group Benefit Coverage.
The hiring range reflects our targeted compensation framework for the role. The actual offer will be determined through a comprehensive evaluation of each candidate's experience, capabilities, and potential impact, along with consideration of internal equity, team structure, and benchmark market data for similar positions.
