The FAS Compliance Manager is part of the Risk, Control and Compliance team within Finance and Accounting Services. The role is responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing monitoring of the Rio Tinto control framework across FAS finance processes, covering both SOX and internal controls.
The role provides functional and matrix leadership within FAS, acting as a key interface between First Line process owners and Second Line assurance. The Compliance Manager supports effective control design, oversees control performance, and ensures that risks are appropriately identified, assessed, and mitigated in line with Group requirements.
This role is suited to an experienced compliance professional who leads through influence, partners closely with stakeholders, uplifts team capability, and contributes to a strong and sustainable control environment within FAS.
It's a Limited Term role (Until March 2028).
Key Responsibilities Of The Role
Control framework and assurance
- Lead and review FAS risk assessments and periodic refresh of finance process maps.
- Partner with FAS process and control owners to design, document, and maintain effective SOX and internal controls.
- Govern FAS Risk and Control Matrices to ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with actual business operations.
- Identify gaps in the control environment, define remediation strategies, and monitor timely resolution of issues.
First and Second Line interface
- Act as a key interface between First Line FAS process owners and Second Line assurance activities.
- Support First Line teams with control design, enhancement, and clarification of evidence expectations, while maintaining appropriate Second Line independence.
- Ensure clear ownership, accountability, and escalation of control issues within FAS.
Audit and stakeholder management
- Lead coordination with Group Internal Audit (GIA) and external auditors (including KPMG) for FAS scoped audits and SOX testing.
- Manage remediation of SOX control deficiencies, including root cause analysis, remediation planning, and follow-up testing.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to FAS leadership, control owners, and functional stakeholders on risk, controls, and compliance matters.
Projects and continuous improvement
- Lead and/or contribute to Group Services and FAS finance initiatives, including automation, standardisation, and transformation projects. Support the integration of control requirements into day-to-day FAS operations and new or changing
processes.
Team and matrix leadership within FAS
- Provide day-to-day functional leadership, coaching, and technical guidance to junior FAS compliance team members.
- Lead through influence in a matrix environment, without direct line management accountability.

What experience, skills and qualifications are required?
- Masters’s or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field; CA or equivalent preferred; CISA desirable.
- It's a Limited Term role (Until March 2028).
- 15+ years’ experience in risk management, internal audit, SOX compliance, or controls and assurance.
- Strong knowledge of Record-to-Report and related finance processes.
- Experience coordinating and supporting audits with internal and external auditors.
- Experience working on transformation, automation, or continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ability to analyse large volumes of data; data analytics experience preferred.
- Operational knowledge of ERP systems supporting Record-to-Report processes.
- Proven ability to influence and engage stakeholders across multiple levels of the organisation.
- Experience providing functional or matrix leadership, coaching, or mentoring within a compliance or assurance environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
