About The Role
We are looking for a Health and Safety Manager Site Services to join our team in Guinea developing the Simandou Project. Working with the Simandou Project team provides the opportunity to be part of one of the most exciting mining developments in the industry. As part of this unique mega project, you will contribute to something significant and learn and develop both personally and professionally. We offer a collaborative, high performing environment where success is achieved by working together.
You will lead a team of health and safety professionals, develop and execute programs in collaboration with line management leaders and members of the HSE department.
You will build capacity, tools, and best practices as part of a supportive and collaborative team in an area of high importance and develop your influencing skills by working in a cross-functional team, including Corporate Areas of Expertise for Safety and Health, site-based HS teams, and with site leadership.
Role is mine-based but will require travel to Conakry and Port, FiFO 4/2
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a team of health & safety professionals across multiple and supporting various functions including Business Services, Logistics, Security and Transshipment operations in meeting their HSE obligations
- Plan and lead the implementation of the Safety Foundation Plan and other Simfer HSE priorities in collaboration with the business functions; and in line with Rio Tinto and standards and the Simfer HSE Integrated Management System.
- Embed key processes like risk management, operational control, verification and assurance and incident management within operational teams.
- Prepare annual plans and manage budgets
- Develop capability of the team with a strong focus on technical skills developments, influencing capabilities and succession planning.
- Build productive relationships and communicate effectively across the different HSE workstreams, other functions, employees, site management, contracting partners, and corporate areas of excellence.
- Perform additional duties as directed from time to time.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing across the technical team.
- Interface with contractor teams to ensure safe and efficient execution of mine plans.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, cost optimization, and risk reduction strategies.
What You’ll Bring
- University degree in health, safety, engineering or related field, or related discipline.
- Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering or related discipline (master’s preferred)
- 10 years' experience in mining, preferably operations
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and the team.
- Demonstrated experience in leadership roles, building capability in teams and in-field coaching.
- Experience in project management and working across different teams to achieve results.
- Confidence to lead with the principles of everyday respect, inclusivity and psychological safety
- Ability to work in fast-paced, challenging environments and manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Effective communication skills, including superior written and verbal communication skills (English and French preferred).
- High level of self-initiative but also comfortable asking for help when needed.
- Solutions-oriented, continuous improvement, and creative approach.
- Ease with IT-based data management software and communication skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.)

About The Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.
Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
