New Afton
Situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.

About The Role
Schedule: 5x2 (Mon-Fri) or 4x3 (Mon-Thu)
Position Reports To: Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Position Overview
Supports the Underground Geotechnical Engineering team and Mine Operations through ground support QA/QC and geotechnical field data collection to help ensure safe and effective ground control.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct QA/QC inspections of underground ground support installations, including rockbolts, mesh, straps, shotcrete, cable bolts, and other support systems
- Complete ground support testing and verification activities, such as pull testing, shotcrete testing, and other assigned QA/QC tasks
- Complete face mapping inspections and collect geological and geotechnical observations in active headings and other designated areas
- Collect and process LiDAR scans in underground headings and other designated areas
- Capture field photographs, notes, sketches, and other field documentation to support engineering review and follow-up
- Assist with other routine underground inspections and audits, and complete associated documentation of inspection findings and changing ground conditions
- Record structural, lithological, groundwater, and ground condition observations in accordance with site procedures and plans
- Record deficiencies, non-conformances, and key field observations, and ensure they are communicated and escalated to the appropriate personnel as needed
- Prepare and deliver reports documenting ground support QA/QC results, inspection findings, and other assigned geotechnical activities
- Ensure field data are stored, organized, and documented in accordance with site data management standards to support data quality, traceability, and reliable retrieval
- Support geotechnical instrumentation programs through installation, maintenance, inspection, and field troubleshooting activities
- Support the field implementation and follow-up of ground support trials and related geotechnical activities as assigned
Qualifications
- Diploma, certificate, or technical training in mining, geological, geotechnical, civil, or a related field
- Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Underground mining experience is preferred
- Experience with underground inspections, survey, instrumentation and/or geotechnical fieldwork is considered an asset
- Familiarity with underground ground support systems and mining methods is considered an asset
- Experience with 3D mining and technical software such as Leapfrog, Deswik, and point cloud software such as PointStudio and CloudCompare is considered an asset
- Strong observational, organizational, and documentation skills
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Ability to work underground and perform strenuous fieldwork
- Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of personnel and work independently
- Valid driver’s license required including experience operating a vehicle with a manual transmission.
Other Requirements
Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:
- Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
- Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
- Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements
Compensation
The anticipated salary for this position will be between $75,000 to $94,000. A comprehensive benefits program and performance bonus plan will also be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
