Position Description
The Barrick Africa & Middle East Team are seeking to recruit a
Open Pit Geotechnical Manager - AME.
The Open Pit Geotechnical Manager will assist the team’s across various sites, focused on preparing and executing geotechnical work of consistent high-quality in a timely manner, which will lead to optimised, practical, safe, and efficient mining operations. The Open Pit Geotechnical Manager will take a supporting role in communicating with and working collaboratively and effectively with all technical, operational, logistical, administrative and financial disciplines across the business. The incumbent must ensure that technical work is planned, designed, implemented, communicated and tracked in order to deliver work of a high professional standard that meet the requirements of the business and is delivered on time and on budget.
You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to operate within our mining assets and with our teams. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner towards achieving targets in accordance with Mine Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures.
Responsibilities
- Lead the open pit geotechnical teams across the AME region.
- Ensure that site teams implement the Barrick geotechnical standards across the AME region.
- Lead group wide geotechnical programmes as required.
- Identify gaps in geotechnical work and develop plans to remedy any issues.
- Support site teams through investigations of incidents.
- Support site teams by providing geotechnical input into the mining & mine planning process for pits as required.
- Assist with the development of geotechnical work plans, budgets, data acquisition, and data analysis to support pit designs.
- Regularly visit sites to review work, provide support and to improve execution.
- Ensure work is of the appropriate technical quality, with current systems and analysis.
- Ensure hydrogeology is properly addressed by the site teams.
- Review and evaluate geotechnical changes where required by site teams or risk levels, including stability analysis and other approaches.
- Ensure pit designs are supported with quality and adequate geological and geotechnical data to meet NI-43 101 requirements.
- Communicate relevant Geotechnical information timely to the operational management team and AME management.
- Train and mentor young Geotechnical Engineers.
- Help maintain a full complement of geotechnical engineers on the site teams.
- Assist geotechnically on other company projects as required.
- Compliance with all statutory regulations and procedures.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Geological/ Civil/ Mining Engineering, preferably with a Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Rock Mechanics.
Experience And Requirements
- 10+ years of geotechnical engineering experience.
- Experience in implementing geotechnical programmes and improvements.
- Effective leadership skills are required.
- Advanced ability to use geotechnical engineering software for design.
- Demonstrated understanding of geotechnical engineering theories, principles and analysis.
- The ability to integrate aspects of risk and safety into geotechnical results and analysis.
- Experience in preparing policies and procedures to geotechnical issues.
- On site experience of geotechnical work.
- Experience in delivering geotechnical designs.
- Strong presentation, oratory, and verbal skills.
- Able to communicate ideas and recommendations to team members in a clear manner.
- Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization, including executives.
- Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.
- Able to create alternative solutions to problems.
- Strong time management and project management skills.
- High level of sound and independent judgment and reasoning.
- Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
- French is not a requirement but would be an advantage.
