Job Summary
Reporting to the SVP Technical Services, the Principal Mining Engineer (Underground) supports Equinox Gold’s technical services team by applying operational expertise across the company’s underground and, to a lesser extent, open pit operations. The role focuses on improvement initiatives, site support, and technical advisory across operations in Canada, the USA, Mexico, and Nicaragua.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify value-adding opportunities during site audits
- Deliver continuous improvement initiatives across operations
- Ensure safety and regulatory compliance
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve production targets
- Benchmark operations internally and against industry peers
- Undertake equipment trade-off studies and cost estimation
- Support mining method trade-off studies, including open pit exposure
- Provide advice on underground mining best practices
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related discipline
Certifications:
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or equivalent required
Required Experience & Technical Skills
- 10–15 years of experience in mining engineering, primarily in operational roles
- Experience in underground mining (production engineer, superintendent, or manager roles)
- Exposure to open pit operations is an asset
- Experience with underground mining methods (longhole stoping, cut and fill, sublevel caving)
- Experience in ground support design
- Exposure to underground automation and tele-remote systems (LHDs, trucks, drills)
- Experience with equipment and mining method trade-offs
- Experience in ventilation, refrigeration, and mine services design and optimization
- Experience in mine planning
- Experience across commodities, preferably gold
- Continuous improvement experience is an asset
- Underground drill and blast experience (development and production)
