About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact
As Supervisor, Geotechnical Engineering, you will play a key role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of open-pit mining operations by leading geotechnical hazard management, minimizing risks to people and production, and driving continuous improvement in a unique geothermal environment.
As Part of Our Team, You Will
- Identify and manage geotechnical and geothermal hazards in the open pit, stockpiles, and marine dumps through data analysis, inspections, and monitoring.
- Lead slope reconciliation, stability analysis, and provide design recommendations for mine planning.
- Mentor and guide your team and department on geotechnical best practices.
- Develop and manage technical projects, track KPIs, and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Report hazards, conduct risk assessments, and implement controls for safe mining.
- Promote geotechnical hazard awareness and continuous improvement across the Mining Department.
Prerequisites for Your Success in This Role
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology or Engineering (Civil or Mining); postgraduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering is desirable.
- Proven experience in geotechnical management of open pit mines, including time in a senior role.
- Advanced skills in slope design, geotechnical monitoring, risk assessment, and data analysis.
- Proficiency with geotechnical and mining software (e.g., Rocscience software suits, Slide 2D & 3D, RS2 & RS3, Dips, Sedge Minesight, Leapfrog), MS Office, and SAP.
- Strong planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and mentoring abilities.
- PNG Driver’s License (essential).
- Accreditation from the Institute of Engineers PNG Inc. (as part of work permit process).
Your Work Environment
- Lead a team of 3–4 geotechnical professionals within the Technical Services team.
- Collaborate with mining, engineering, and safety departments, as well as external consultants.
- Operate in a dynamic, safety-focused, and supportive environment on Lihir Island, facing unique geotechnical and geothermal challenges.
