Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

We have an exciting opportunity for a
Tax Specialist to join Anglo American Steelmaking Coal (SMC), reporting directly to the Australian Country Tax Manager and working alongside a team of high-calibre tax professionals at our Brisbane Corporate Office.
SMC is a Top 100 taxpayer in Australia and one of the largest royalty payers in Queensland. As part of one of the world’s leading multinational mining groups, SMC maintains a significant tax compliance and governance footprint. This scale and complexity demand a sophisticated tax team to manage all compliance, advisory, and governance requirements.
In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring SMC’s ongoing tax compliance and governance obligations are met. SMC operates under a co-sourced tax compliance model, partnering with Big 4 accounting firms for delivery.

Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with SMC’s advisors, Finance function, and Group Tax Team to ensure accurate and timely completion of all tax compliance and reporting obligations, including income tax, GST, FBT, employment taxes, transfer pricing, coal and coal seam gas royalty returns, tax-effect accounting, tax forecasting, and financial statement disclosures.
- Support SMC in responding to routine tax reviews and audits across all taxes, including ‘Top 100’ Justified Trust income tax and GST reviews, as well as Coal and CSG Royalty Audits.
- Communicate tax compliance and reporting issues effectively to management and raise awareness of emerging tax matters.
- Identify and implement process improvement initiatives to strengthen tax compliance and governance.
- Assist the Country Tax Manager in analysing new tax legislation and providing advice on its application to Anglo American.
- Partner with the Group Tax Team on global disclosure requirements, including Country-by-Country Reporting, Tax and Economic Contribution Reporting, and Pillar 2 Global Minimum Tax Reporting.
- Support the Governance Team in monitoring SMC’s tax control framework, ensuring controls operate effectively.
Design and document key processes, procedures, and risks in alignment with SMC’s tax control framework.
Qualifications
This role requires a tax professional with a passion for compliance, governance and process improvement. Experience in both direct and indirect taxes is highly desirable, but experience in one or the other is sufficient.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
- Professional certification (CA, CPA, ACA, ACMA, CFA) or MBA preferred
- Proven experience in Tax within Commerce or Public Practice, with strong understanding of tax concepts and laws
- Knowledge of the mining sector and indirect taxes advantageous
- Skilled in governance, compliance, and applying technology for efficiency and control
- Strong project management, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and ability to work under pressure in a dynamic environment
- Proficient in accounting systems, Excel, and familiar with tools such as Power BI or other tax technologies preferred
