Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.
Job Description
Dawson Mine is excited to announce an exceptional opportunity for a Maintenance Superintendent: Planning to join the Maintenance Leadership Team at Dawson Mine on a full-time, permanent basis with Anglo American.
Reporting to the Engineering & Maintenance Manager, you will lead the Planning team by carrying out all aspects of the development and execution of maintenance strategies, capital equipment planning, shutdown management, and lifecycle cost optimisation. By ensuring the availability and integrity of HME and Field assets. The Planning team supports sustainable production, operational excellence, and the long-term value of the operation.
The key accountabilities are, not limited to:
- Provide strategic direction by communicating asset strategies, BARA inputs, and the Plan on a Page across the Planning function.
- Govern the Engineering & Maintenance RACI, ensuring clear role definition, succession planning, and capability development pathways.
- Lead Life of Mine (LOM) equipment planning, annual condition assessments, and long‑term asset forecasting to inform investment decisions.
- Design and implement improvement initiatives, asset retirement pathways, and continuity plans aligned with operational and compliance requirements.
- Define asset specifications and lifecycle design requirements, and oversee full project delivery including capital applications, procurement, and site readiness.
- Coordinate site introduction, commissioning, and post‑execution reviews for new or modified assets.
- Develop and govern equipment maintenance strategies, including TUMs, task lists, tooling standards, and component replacement frameworks.
- Drive reliability improvements through root cause analysis, strip report reviews, and adoption of new technologies.
- Oversee SAP/CMMS data integrity, asset registers, documentation standards, and asset data audits to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Lead maintenance planning and scheduling processes, validating scope, resources, and shutdown readiness to enable safe and efficient execution.
- Govern shutdown and overhaul planning systems, cost tracking, contractor readiness, and post‑shutdown performance reviews.
- Manage procurement and inventory strategies, including critical spares, rotables, warranty processes, and analysis of part usage and failures.
- Lead contractor management frameworks, including scopes of work, risk assessments, KPI reviews, and compliance with site safety and performance expectations.
- Monitor and report on maintenance KPIs, cost forecasts, downtime data integrity, and alignment of planning outputs with site priorities.
- Lead team capability development, OEM engagement, risk and compliance processes, and cost control activities including budgeting, forecasting, and governance of unplanned spend.
- Other requirements as assigned by the Engineering & Maintenance Manager.
Qualifications
To be successful you will have the following:
- Demonstrated experience and capability in a progressive maintenance leadership role within the Resources industry.
- Tertiary qualifications in Engineering or a related discipline (i.e. Master of Engineering Management) or relevant trade qualifications and industry experience.
- Supervisor & Risk Facilitator competencies (S1, 2, 3 & G2, G3).
- Postgraduate qualifications in Project Management, Asset Management or Business are desirable.
- RPEQ accreditation in Mechanical Engineering is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, OEM knowledge (CAT & Komatsu) and heavy machinery used in mining operations.
- Previous experience with SAP or a similar ERP will be desirable.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identify and address mechanical challenges.
- Adherence to safety regulations and a commitment to creating a safe working environment for all team members.
