Rainy River Mine
Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit and underground, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario. The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. Position Reports To: Senior Underground Geotechnical Engineer
Position Overview
The Intermediate Underground Geotechnical Engineer is a key member of the Rainy River Mine Geotechnical Team, supporting both office- and field-based activities and reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer. This position is based at the Rainy River Underground Mine site.
The role primarily provides geotechnical and ground control support to the Underground Mine Technical Services team, contributing to the effective implementation of the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP). The Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for execution of aspects of underground ground control, including the assessment of ground conditions, identification of geotechnical risks, and development of ground support recommendations. All recommendations and work practices must comply with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation 854 – Mines and Mining Plants , as well as other applicable legislation, standards, and site-specific requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide geotechnical and ground control support for the Rainy River Underground Mine.
- Support and mentor Geotechnical Engineers-in-Training (EITs).
- Perform numerical modelling and stope stability analysis for underground excavations.
- Integrate rock mass characterization and structural geology data into geotechnical design and stability assessments.
- Maintain and update the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) to reflect design changes and supporting analyses.
- Support execution of inspections, instrumentation, monitoring, and surveillance programs in alignment with the GCMP and Quality Control requirements.
- Plan and perform quality control duties in accordance with the policies and procedures.
- Stay updated on current state of practice for underground geotechnical design and technologies.
- Communicate geotechnical design intent and recommendations effectively across the organization.
- Provide geotechnical input to internal mine designs and review deliverables from external consultants.
- Promote Health and Safety by participating in daily and weekly meetings.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related discipline; a Master’s degree is considered an asset.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with PEO, or eligible for immediate registration.
- 4–7 years of experience in rock mechanics and underground ground support design; relevant co-op or internship experience may be considered.
- Experience in operating underground mines preferred; longhole stoping experience is an asset.
- Working knowledge of rock mass classification systems (RMR, Q’, GSI) and underground mapping.
- Experience with 2D and 3D geotechnical numerical modelling (e.g., Rocscience products, Map3D) and mine planning software (e.g., Deswik).
- Experience with geological and geotechnical modelling software (e.g., Leapfrog, GeoStudio) is an asset.
- Experience installing geotechnical instrumentation, performing quality control, and interpreting monitoring data is preferred.
- Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license (or equivalent Canadian license) with a clean driving record.
- Strong communication, analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and manage priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Compensation
The anticipated salary range for this position will be between $105,000 to $130.000
