Job description:
Purpose
To execute maintenance and repair functions on conveyors and chute systems in line with company standards and instructions, ensuring maximum availability, reliability, and safety of equipment, tools, and personnel. The incumbent will perform boilermaker activities in a safe and effective manner, delivering results that meet quality standards and operational expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures, and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment, and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and other applicable company regulations.
- Carry out structural repairs and alterations on conveyor frames, chute liners, and supporting structures.
- Perform general fabrication of conveyor components, chute assemblies, guards, and brackets.
- Apply full welding skills to maintain and repair conveyor and chute systems.
- Use oxy-acetylene cutting torches for dismantling and modification of conveyor and chute parts.
- Read and interpret schematic and fabrication drawings related to conveyor and chute layouts.
- Conduct inspections of conveyor and chute components to determine reliability and wear, including rollers, pulleys, liners, and structural supports.
- Assist in maintaining fleet availability through effective preventative maintenance procedures on conveyor belts and chute systems.
- Take reasonable precautions to minimize hazards to personnel and equipment during maintenance work.
- Provide feedback to management on issues identified, job progress, and planned work related to conveyors and chutes.
- Perform any other duties as directed by the supervisor.
Job-Specific Competences
- Sound knowledge of metal types used in conveyor and chute fabrication (e.g., mild steel, wear-resistant steel, aluminum).
- Proficiency in welding processes, electrodes, and welding wire suitable for conveyor and chute applications.
- Skilled in handling equipment and materials for heavy fabrication tasks.
- Ability to interpret complex fabrication drawings for conveyor structures and chute assemblies.
- Experience with heavy fabrication, particularly fixed and mobile plant conveyors.
- Competence in welding aluminium and cast-iron components.
- Proficiency in oxy lancing and air arc gouging for chute liner removal and conveyor frame modifications.
- Skilled in welding with gas and gasless welding wires.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 School Certificate.
- Advanced certificate in metal fabrication.
- Membership with the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ).
- Certificate of attendance in incident and accident investigation and reporting.
- Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in boilermaker work, preferably with conveyors and chute systems.
- All qualifications must be certified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA)
