Rainy River
Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River mine is an open pit and underground, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
The Rainy River mine, located adjacent to the Ontario/Minnesota border is 65 kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. About The Role

Position Reports To: Tailings Dam Engineer-in-Training (TDEIT)
Position Overview
The Civil Engineering Co-Op Student (Dam Monitoring) position offers an exciting opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in an active mining environment, with learning and growth opportunities in the areas of tailings dam construction, monitoring, and governance. The opportunity is available on a fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) rotation for a 4-month fall co-op term from August to December 2026.
The successful candidate must demonstrate commitment to, and compliance with, all company and industry Health & Safety, Environmental, Social Responsibility, and Code of Conduct policies and is responsible for engaging their work with the Courage to Care, meaning never compromising on safety, looking out for one another, and stopping work if it is not safe.
The Civil Engineering Co-Op Student (Dam Monitoring) will report to the Tailings Dam Engineer-in-Training (TDEIT) who will direct work assignments in field and office. Field and office assignments will include tailings dam inspection, collection of instrumentation geotechnical data (including piezometers, settlement plates, and slope inclinometers), instrumentation maintenance and troubleshooting, tailings and water elevation survey, instrumentation data management and processing, instrumentation report preparation, as well as other duties as assigned to support the TDEIT and the Tailings Dam Engineer (TDE). Field work may occur in all weather conditions. The Civil Engineering Co-Op Student (Dam Monitoring) will work from the Marr Site Construction Office in a multi-disciplinary open office team environment.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Demonstrate strong commitment and adherence to all Health & Safety Policies and Procedures.
- Demonstrate strong commitment and adherence to all Code of Conduct Policies.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude with enthusiasm and eagerness to learn cross-functional department areas.
- Work collaboratively with a variety of industry professionals across construction and technical disciplines.
- Conduct regular piezometer, settlement plate, slope inclinometer, tailings and water level readings, and other survey and GPS field work at frequencies specified in the site Operation, Maintenance, and Surveillance (OMS) Manual.
- Input of data into spreadsheets, validation & assessment of data, and producing data reports for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Management of the instrumentation database working collaboratively with the GIS Department.
- Create and maintain a centralized inventory database for all instrumentation, including key details, maintenance schedules, and ensure regular updates and audits.
- Performing repairs on piezometer dataloggers and ensure efficient monitoring of instrumentation on site.
- Review Engineer of Record (EOR) instrumentation reports and address deficiencies in accordance with their recommendations, in consultation with TDEIT and TDE.
- Conduct visual inspections within Tailings Management Area (TMA) in accordance with the schedule defined by the OMS, TDEIT, TDE, or EOR.
- Be familiar with requirements of OMS Manual and Tailings Management System (TMS), and support TDEIT and TDE in tracking OMS & TMS activities to ensure the OMS & TMS requirements are met.
- Inform the TDEIT and TDE of any issues observed or identified by others concerning the dam monitoring program, including potential dam safety concerns, data inconsistencies, or equipment malfunctions.
- Assisting with site investigation & sampling work including drilling and test pitting programs.
- Other varied duties and responsibilities as assigned by TDEIT or TDE.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Canacian-accredited undergraduate engineering program and returning to studies.
- Civil (Geotechnical) programs are preferred but are not required for consideration.
- Consistently demonstrate a positive attitude contributing to a high-performance workplace culture.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, a team player across a multi-disciplinary dynamic team environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills across communication mediums.
- Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills across work assignments, priorities, and disciplines.
- Proficiency in computer-based software (Microsoft Suite, Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and others).
- Ability to work a fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) rotation in an active mining and camp environment.
- Ability to change and re-prioritize tasks as new information is gathered or plans and priorities change.
- Ability to self-motivate and work independently or collaborate within multi-disciplinary groups.
- Previous experience in construction or mining environments with heavy equipment is considered advantageous.
- Previous experience in construction trades or labour environments is considered advantageous.
Working Conditions
- Field 80% & Office 20%
- Occasional moderate lifting required (50 lbs)
Compensation
The anticipated salary range for this position will be between $55,000.00 -$74,000.00.
