New Porgera Limited (NPL) is a company incorporated in Papua New Guinea and owns the Porgera Gold Mine in Enga Province. The Porgera Gold Mine will employ nearly 3,000 Papua New Guineans at full production, and over the last 30 years of life of the mine it has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea’s total annual exports.
The New Porgera Limited now has a vacancy for a qualified and experienced individual as Trade Assistant – Mine Communications Underground.
About The Role
Reporting to the Supervisor – Mine Communications Underground, the Trade Assistant will play a key role in supporting the daily operations of the mine communications team. This involves assisting in the maintenance, repair, and installation of underground communication systems, ensuring that all communication equipment is fully functional and reliable for safe and efficient mine operations. You will work closely with the trades team to minimize downtime and maintain a safe and effective underground communication network.
In This Role, You Will
- Assist in the maintenance, repair, and installation of mine communications systems, including underground radio systems, intercoms, and other communication devices
- Assist with the cleaning and maintenance of communication equipment and systems
- Support tradesmen with tasks such as cable pulling, termination preparation, and equipment setup.
- Prepare and organize tools, materials, and equipment required for electrical work.
- Operate support equipment such as integrated tool carriers and utility vehicles were required.
- Maintain accurate records of work completed, parts used, and any issues identified.
- Follow instructions from qualified tradesmen and supervisors to ensure tasks are carried out safely and efficiently.
- Help manage parts and consumables inventory to support ongoing electrical maintenance.
- Assist with troubleshooting and diagnosing electrical issues under supervision.
- Ensure all activities comply with NPL’s safety, health, and environmental standards, while actively promoting a strong safety culture.
About You
To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experiences:
- Minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent education
- Ability to read and write in English at an Upper Secondary School Standard
- Completion of the Job Ready Program or relevant Trade Training Program or experience in a similar role
- Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
- Willingness to adhere to safety regulations and protocols.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow instructions from supervisors and tradespeople
- Physically fit and able to work in an underground environment and varying weather conditions
- Fluency in English and/or Tok Pisin is an advantage.
- Current PNG Class 1 or 6 Drivers license with ability to acquire a Site LV Driving Permit.
- Previous experience in operating an integrated tool carrier will be an advantage.
Mobilization Requirement
This is a PNG National Award position, a site-based role on a Walk in Walk out arrangement with rotation of 14 days on and 7 days off. Must successfully pass a pre-employment medical including drug and alcohol screening. (This will be arranged only for successful candidates who progress after the interview stage) and have an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months). Must a Local Porgeran (Cat 1A – SML, Cat 1B –LMP or Cat 2 – Other Porgera) candidate and available to start immediately. Females are encouraged to apply.
