Role Overview/Purpose
The Process Control Specialist (Automation Technician) provides hands‑on support for process control, automation, operational technology (OT), and industrial data systems across the Island Gold District. This role supports mining and processing operations by maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving DCS, PLC, HMI/SCADA, historian, and industrial network systems, while contributing to safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation.
Primary Responsibilities
Control Systems & Automation
- Develop, maintain, troubleshoot, and upgrade Emerson DeltaV Distributed Control Systems (DCS) used for continuous plant process control.
- Develop, program, maintain, and troubleshoot PLC‑based control systems across platforms such as Schneider Electric, Siemens, Mitsubishi, and DeltaV‑integrated PLC environments, supporting mining, processing, and infrastructure applications.
- Modify and enhance control logic using ladder logic, function block, and structured text programming.
- Design, program, and maintain HMI and SCADA systems, including Citect SCADA, FactoryTalk View, Vijeo Designer, and C‑More.
- Configure, program, and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) from vendors including ABB, Eaton, Schneider Electric, Rockwell, and Toshiba, along with associated motor control and protection systems.
- Design, configure, and maintain OPC and Modbus communications between PLCs, DCS platforms, HMIs, and third‑party systems.
- Analyze and tune process control loops to improve process stability, equipment performance, and operational efficiency.
- Support operational technology systems and applications integrated into plant and mining operations.
Plant, Mining & Infrastructure Systems
- Provide automation and control system support for process plants and surface facilities, including crushing, grinding, materials handling, paste systems, seepage collection, and water and effluent treatment plants.
- Support underground and surface mining infrastructure, including ore and waste handling systems, shaft systems, portable underground processing equipment, and associated utilities.
- Maintain and troubleshoot ventilation control systems, including Ventilation on Demand (VOD) applications.
- Support gas monitoring, ventilation monitoring, and substation and power monitoring systems.
- Assist with the configuration and maintenance of seismic monitoring systems, including Paladin seismic platforms.
- Participate in plant and site inspections to identify safety, control system, and process improvement opportunities.
OT Networking, Servers & Data Systems
- Maintain and troubleshoot operational technology (OT) and industrial Ethernet networks, including managed switch infrastructure from vendors such as Hirschmann and Cisco.
- Maintain, configure, and troubleshoot Microsoft‑based PCs and servers supporting control systems, visualization, and industrial applications.
- Support OSIsoft / AVEVA PI historian systems, including PI tag configuration, PI Vision displays, and data extraction using tools such as PI Datalink.
- Support integration between control systems, historians, and reporting or business systems.
- Maintain system documentation, backups, asset inventories, and software licensing.
- Assist with implementation and maintenance of industrial cybersecurity controls in coordination with site and corporate IT/OT teams.
Operational Support & Troubleshooting
- Provide on‑site and remote troubleshooting support for automation, instrumentation, electrical, and networked control systems.
- Participate in after‑hours and on‑call support rotations as required to support plant operations.
- Perform system diagnostics and assist with root‑cause analysis of control system issues.
- Work with vendors, system integrators, and contractors during maintenance activities, upgrades, and expansions.
Projects, Safety & Continuous Improvement
- Support automation‑related scope for capital and sustaining projects, including review of control narratives and functional descriptions.
- Assist with control system commissioning and start‑up activities under the direction of site or project leadership.
- Identify opportunities to improve safety, reliability, and process performance within assigned systems.
- Engage with operations and maintenance personnel to promote safe work practices and effective use of control systems.
- Prepare technical documentation, reports, and training materials as required.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications And Experience
- Post‑secondary college diploma in Process Control, Instrumentation, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation, or a related technical discipline, typically involving 2–3 years of study.
- A combination of relevant technical education and hands‑on experience in electrical, instrumentation, or process control roles will be considered.
- Progressive experience working with process control, automation, or operational technology (OT) systems in mining or heavy industrial environments.
- Hands‑on experience with DCS and PLC systems, HMI/SCADA platforms, VFDs, field instrumentation, and industrial communications.
- Exposure to process historians, industrial networks, and control system servers in an operating plant environment is considered an asset.
- Ability to safely work around energized electrical and control equipment.
- Experience supporting operating plants or continuous production environments is preferred.
- Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to work effectively in a team‑based operational environment.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
