Coeur Alaska’s Kensington mine comprises an underground, hard-rock gold mine, associated milling facilities and a campsite in the historic Berners Bay Mining District, 45 miles north-northwest of Juneau. About the Job:
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Metallurgical Superintendent, is responsible for the safe, efficient and environmentally sound operation of the metallurgical team and assay laboratory. They will support mine, processing, exploration/geology and water treatment departments by providing timely and accurate testing and determinations. The Metallurgical Superintendent is ultimately responsible for quality of assay lab determinations and efficiency of extraction and water treatment processes. They will be a direct part of achieving processing goals in safe and environmentally responsible manner.
The schedule for this position is 14 days on at the mine site located about 45-miles north of Juneau, accessible only through company transportation, and 14 days off.
Responsibilities:
- Stop work for safety concerns and abide by safety best practices, policies, and procedures.
- Maintaining accurate analytical records and timely reporting of results.
- Direct analytical activities and functions with emphasis on developing reliable and efficient methods of analysis.
- Responsible for reconciling and QA/QC of all metallurgical accounting and assay lab determinations.
- Work closely with the Mine department, technical services and process operations needs and schedules.
- Project management with outside contractors for any specialized analytical equipment support or supplemental analysis and management of the data collection system (LIMS).
- Manage suppliers and inventory to track costs associated with operating the lab and process consumables.
- Developing yearly budgets based on expected departmental sample volumes.
- Recommend improvements in processes based on technical research, equipment specifications and observed performance in the field.
- Use mineralogy to understand performance issues within the extraction processes.
- Generate business improvement ideas based on practical and technical experiences.
- Manage trials, new circuit projects and work closely with Fixed Maintenance on equipment improvements.
- Collaborate with Mine, Geology on development of new ore bodies.
- Provide guidance on daily performance issues within a process.
- Develop analytical assaying methods and metallurgical testing procedures.
- Conveying information clearly and effectively through both formal and informal documentation.
- Progression review and regular performance evaluations of all staff members.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- Ability to work safe and promote safe behavior in others.
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical or metallurgical engineering or related field.
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a team-oriented mindset – being respectful, reliable, and easy to work with is just as important as technical skills.
- Approximately 10+ years of related experience.
- Troubleshoot equipment, and advanced problem-solving ability.
- Up to date with industry technologies.
- Practical experience in a process plant and analytical/metallurgical laboratory environment.
