About 100 miners trapped underground, 400 rescued at Harmony Gold’s mine
*UPDATE: All miners rescued safe and sound*
South Africa’s Harmony Gold (JSE:HAR) (NYSE:HMY) confirmed Sunday that 389 of the 486 employees trapped underground earlier in the day after a fire broke at its Kusasalethu mine, have been rescued with no injuries.
Specially trained rescue teams continue their efforts to save the remaining employees, said the company.
“The fire has now been contained. It is believed to have started during maintenance work on a bulk air cooler on 75 level, some 2,300 metres below surface, at around 09:40 am local time,” Harmony said in the statement.
All operations at the mine, other than those related to the rescue have been suspended.
