BHP Billiton planning to build five new potash mines in Saskatchewan

The StarPhoenix reports that BHP Billiton is planning to build five potash mines, all of which could rival the Jansen project.

The company is on target to begin hauling potash out of the ground by 2015, said [Tim Cutt, president of diamond and specialty products]. If the company proceeds, Jansen is expected to produce two million tonnes per year, eventually increasing to four million, then eight million tonnes as operations grow.
