Mining companies were awarded and celebrated last night for their investments in renewable energy at a glittering awards gala and dinner in Toronto.

The shortlist includes a geographically diverse group of mining operators with a wide variety of project sizes using wind, solar and solar thermal technologies to power their operations.

Energy and Mines has released the initial results of the first global rankings of renewables use by mining companies identifying the top 21 mining companies using wind and solar to power their operations.

With energy accounting for 20-40% of operational costs, mines are looking to renewables to drive affordable and secure power solutions for grid-tied and remote operations.

Current pressures on the mining sector is driving increased interest in the cost savings and power security advantages that renewables can provide mining operations. This October 22-23, a record number of mining leaders will meet with renewable energy and finance experts to network and share knowledge at the 3rd annual Energy and Mines Toronto Summit.
