High Australian mining wages attract dubious workers

Lucrative jobs in the Western Australia mining industry are attracting uncommitted and under-qualified workers, wrote Andrew Duffy for Australian Mining yesterday.

CEO of Australian consulting firm Resources and Engineering Skills Alliance Phillip de Courcey laments that many workers are “motivated to only come and earn money as opposed to building a career and a future in the industry and the state.”

Australian miners are the best paid in the world but this lure has attracted many to the industry without appropriate skills or experience.

Skills shortages and low productivity continue to plague Australian mining, according to de Courcey.
