About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose
Develop and implement detailed shutdown plans to ensure safe and efficient execution, minimising operational downtime. Align resources, schedules, and tasks to meet shutdown objectives while maintaining compliance with safety, operational, and governance standards.
Essential Duties
- Plan and scope short- and long-term shutdown maintenance work to align with operational and maintenance objectives
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan, sequence, and allocate resources for shutdown activities
- Monitor shutdown progress and adjust plans as required to address emerging issues and minimise operational impact
Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and corporate standards during planning and execution, escalating nonconformances as required - Maintain and update master data in SAP and related documentation, including shutdown plans, schedules, and activity records. Liaise with contractors and vendors to coordinate the timely delivery of services, materials, and resources
Identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with shutdown activities to support safe and efficient execution - Prepare comprehensive work packs including scope, hazards, permits, tools, labour, materials, durations, and task sequencing. Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of shutdown planning and execution
- Facilitate shutdown meetings, including readiness reviews, schedule updates, and execution progress discussions. Review post-shutdown performance data to identify lessons learned and opportunities for process improvement
Training & Experience
- Experience with fixed plant operations, maintenance, or planning in mining, heavy industry, or manufacturing. Understanding of shutdown planning processes, frameworks, and stage-gate milestones
- Proficiency with SAP S/4HANA, Pronto, Ellipse, or equivalent EAM systems for managing work orders and maintenance records
Knowledge of permit-to-work, isolation, and safety management systems, including SIMOPS coordination. Ability to read and interpret technical documentation such as OEM manuals, P&IDs, and technical drawings - Awareness of resource management, scheduling principles, contractor engagement, and regulatory/compliance requirements
- Proficient in SAP, Pronto, or Ellipse for managing work orders, maintenance history, and asset records.
- Experience in maintenance scheduling or planning within the mining industry, with fixed plant experience highly desirable.
Skilled in creating task lists, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and processing master data changes. Able to read, interpret, and apply OEM manuals, P&IDs, and technical drawings to support maintenance and shutdown activities. - Understanding of permit-to-work processes and isolation design to ensure safe work execution. Capable of preparing technical scopes of work and supporting Request for Quotation (RFQ) development for contractor engagement.
- Experience with PR and PO processing to support procurement and contractor management.
- Trade or Heavy Industry operational experience, preferably with fixed plant exposure. Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple shutdown processes simultaneously through disciplined core routines.
- Current ‘C’ Class Driver’s License (Manual).
