Control & Instrumentation Lead – Africa & Middle East
Position Overview
Barrick’s Africa & Middle East (AME) team are seeking to recruit a
Control & Instrumentation Lead.
The Control & Instrumentation Lead will provide strategic leadership, technical expertise, and operational oversight of control and instrumentation systems across multiple sites in Africa and Middle East. This role ensures that automation, instrumentation, and control systems are optimized to support safe, reliable, and efficient operations, while driving innovation and compliance with international standards.
Key Responsibilities
Manages, monitors and ensures adherence by direct reports to Safety objectives and Zero Harm principles.
- Operational Management:
- Develop and implement regional C&I strategies aligned with corporate objectives.
- Provide technical direction and governance across multiple operations.
- Act as the subject matter expert for automation, instrumentation, and control systems.
- Operational Oversight:
- Ensure reliability, availability, and performance of control systems across all sites.
- Lead troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution of complex control and instrumentation issues.
- Oversee preventive and predictive maintenance programs for instrumentation.
- Project Management:
- Manage regional C&I and Technology projects, including trials, upgrades, expansions, and new installations.
- Coordinate with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to deliver projects on time and within budget.
- Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Drive adoption of emerging technologies such as digitalization, IIoT, and advanced process control.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce downtime, and optimize performance.
- Benchmark best practices across regions and implement standardized solutions.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with site managers, engineering teams, and corporate leadership.
- Build strong relationships with vendors, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
- Provide training, mentorship, and capability development for local C&I teams.
Qualification Requirements
- Recognised degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Control Systems Engineering or related field.
Experience And Skills Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in control and instrumentation, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- Proven experience managing multi-site operations across diverse geographies.
- Strong knowledge of PLCs, DCS, SCADA systems, instrumentation devices, and industrial communication protocols.
- Familiarity with international standards (IEC, ISA, ISO) and regional regulatory frameworks.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and cross-cultural management skills.
- Willingness to travel across Africa and the Middle East.
- Independent, proactive strategic thinker with strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Analytical and presentation skills.
- Written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to safety, compliance, and operational excellence.
