Regional Operational Support Mechanical Engineer – Africa and Middle East
Position Description
The Barrick Africa & Middle East Team are seeking to recruit a
Mechanical Engineer to join the Regional Team. The role will be responsible for providing professional mechanical engineering services to the sites in the region. As the Mechanical Engineer, you will be required to travel to the various sites in the region on a regular basis. The main focus of the role will be to provide operational support to the sites to ensure that the correct maintenance is executed and that maintenance activities are executed according to industry best practices, identify improvement opportunities to reduce equipment downtime and reduce running cost, provide project execution support and to provide oversight and assurance from a legislative and compliance perspective.
You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to operate within our mining assets with our best people teams. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner to achieve targets in accordance with Mine Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures and ensure daily targets are met.
Responsibilities
- Provide guidance and technical support on mechanical engineering to the operations in the region.
- Prepare equipment specifications, capital and operating cost estimates of key equipment.
- Review and establishment of critical spares for key equipment on sites.
- Provide input on mechanical engineering designs.
- Prepare major equipment specifications, datasheets, requisitions and bid evaluations.
- Perform engineering calculations to support design decisions.
- Perform mechanical and structural integrity assessments of critical mechanical equipment currently installed on site.
- Review Finite element analysis results, CAD design and manufacturing drawing data packs, interpretation and review of stress analysis and non-destructive testing.
- Perform Root Cause Analysis on critical failures using different techniques.
- Analyse and review Condition Monitoring data (vibration, thermography, oil analysis, NDT etc).
- Make recommendations on Condition Monitoring techniques to be used to address specific failure modes (oil analysis and tribology, vibration, thermography, NDT, modal analysis, strain measurements etc).
- Develop and review of maintenance procedures (doing the right work, in the right way with the right tools and at the right intervals).
- Review of welding procedures for critical structural repairs.
- Develop repair procedures for temporary and permanent repairs on major equipment.
- Maintain an up-to-date database of major mechanical equipment, critical spares and verify availability of common spares as well as maintenance requirements for spares in storage.
- Perform structural and mechanical design verification in accordance with relevant international codes and standards.
- Ensure that all maintenance activities are executed as per Mine Health and Safety regulations and local legislation.
- Perform factory acceptance testing on critical equipment to ensure that new equipment conforms to the QA/QC requirements.
- Mentoring and coaching of junior engineers and peers on engineering best practices.
- Stay abreast of developments in technology and find application of this technology on the operation to reduce cost, increase uptime and improve safety.
Qualification Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering – required.
- Registered Professional Engineer – required.
- Government Certificate of Competency (South Africa) or similar – advantageous.
- Formal Condition Monitoring qualifications (vibration, thermal, NDT, shaft alignment, weld inspector, QAQC) – advantageous.
Experience And Competencies Needed
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience in the mining industry, with a focus on maintenance execution and continues improvement is essential. Exposure to maintenance strategy development using methods such as Reliability Centered Maintenance principles would be advantages.
- Computer Skills – must have strong computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Outlook).
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Knowledgeable and experienced with mechanical equipment used in the mining industry (mills, crushers, screens, conveyor belts, gearboxes, pumps, etc).
- Prior design experience using 3D modelling software would be advantages.
- Previous experience using advanced engineering analysis software would be advantages (FEA, Pump flow simulation, DEM, etc).
- Previous experience in a manufacturing environment would be advantages.
- Ability to work effectively in multi racial and culturally diverse teams.
