Regional Operational Support Structural Engineer - Africa and Middle East
Position Description
The Barrick Africa and Middle East Team are seeking to recruit a
Structural Engineer to join the team. The role will be responsible to provide professional structural engineering services and support to the operations that will cover design of new plant structures, review and approval of designs, review and assessment of existing infrastructure, develop maintenance plans for the protection and preservation of plant structures and project management services. As the Structural Engineer, you will be required to travel to the various sites in the region on a regular basis.
You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to operate within our mining assets with our best people teams. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner to achieve targets in accordance with Mine Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures and ensure daily targets are met.
Responsibilities
- Provide guidance and technical support on structural engineering designs and repairs of current infrastructure.
- Develop practical procedures for the repair and replacement of critical structures.
- Manage the corrective actions from Structural Inspection and Maintenance Management (SIMM) programmes and assessments.
- Develop and implement corrosion protection strategy for each site for critical plant and equipment.
- Prepare engineering analyses and develop and review specifications, capital and operating cost estimates of key earthworks and civil packages for new projects
- Provide input on structural engineering designs and monitor and ensure effective design, project controls, and quality.
- Estimate CAPEX by identifying major structural work packages along with the associated earthworks, Geotech programme, purchasing cost and associated lead times.
- Review structural and civil package scope of works, specifications, datasheets, requisitions and bid evaluations.
- Perform engineering calculations to support design decisions.
- Prepare, review and negotiate contracts.
- Plan and manage budgets.
- Develop and implement a quality management system with associated quality control programs – specifically related to the structural construction packages.
- Review civil and earthworks packages with associated scopes and requirements to the suppliers based on specifications included in the procurement agreement.
- Perform structural integrity assessments of critical plant, civil and mobile equipment structures.
- Develop repair procedures and methodologies for temporary and permanent structural repairs and replacement of structural members.
- Review of 3D Modelling and manufacturing drawings data packs.
- Perform design verification in accordance with relevant international codes and standards.
- Review business cases for application for expenditure of capital.
- Stay abreast of developments in technology and find application of this technology on the operation to reduce cost, increase uptime and improve safety.
Qualification Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, with specialisation in Structural Engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer.
Experience And Competencies Needed
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in Structural Engineering.
- Experience in the mining industry, with a focus on plant and mobile equipment structural maintenance and repairs.
- Computer Skills – must have strong computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Outlook).
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Knowledgeable and experienced with structural and civil designs and construction with associated earthworks, and geotechnical investigation programmes.
- Previous experience using structural modelling and analysis software would be advantages.
