Arminera and CAEM work to spread good practices within the sector
During the last visit of the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to Buenos Aires, the Argentine Chamber of Mining Companies (CAEM) signed an agreement with the Canadian Mining Association (AMC) to implement in Argentina the TSM – Towards a Sustainable Mining” program.
The companies that make up it commit themselves to annually assess their performance in six important areas: their relationships with the community; the conservation of biodiversity; the use of energy and greenhouse effect gas emissions; tailings management; health and safety of their employees and crisis and communication management. TSM provides a set of tools and indicators that help to measure the performance in these areas and guarantee that the main mining risks are responsibly managed. The results are access free for the audience and they are externally checked every three years.
In this sense, Arminera, the International Trade Fair for the Mining Industry, will be a place to spread and promote said practices, where the companies may discuss their situation, know successful cases, renew their commitment and set goals for the next period.
“We wish Arminera to be a more open space, in which the industry shows all that it is doing to achieve a sustainable development. The aim is to promote a greater communication among the different players, generate transparency and trust”, said the Project Manager, Ezequiel Gorbarán.
The TSM includes, apart from the mentioned protocols, different action frameworks in important subjects such as: mine closing –to fulfill the commitment with the community during the mining life cycle- and water management, a finite resource with high social, cultural and environmental value, and an essential component for mining and minerals processing.
The main advantages of implementing this program are the responsibility, transparency and credibility, three axes in which Arminera and CAEM are currently working on.
The next edition of the exhibition will be carried out on May 9-11, 2017 in Centro Costa Salguero. It will cover an area of 11,600 sqm (raw) and 160 national and international exhibitors will take part of it.
The event is organized by CAEM and Messe Frankfurt Argentina.
